I've decided to go for it..

I've been wanting to do this ever since I got a 72 coupe from a fellow P-nite. It is a 72 non-sr coupe with a 78 3.0 that is set up for x-cross and DE's. The car came with the "S" package (S calipers), short shift 915, adjustable Konis, stock T-bars, lowered, and balanced. The car ran fine, but I just wanted more. Instead of working with the 3.0, I decided to go bigger (albeit not a whole lot bigger) w/3.2.

The car is presently at Jimmy Deering's (great guy, btw. VERY ACCOMODATING!!) new shop in Apple Valley in Socal. The plan is swap it for a 3.2 from an 89 car as well as the entire susension/brakes from that same car. I just bought a set of Webers (40s) and can't quite decide if I want to add them to the swap at this time. This is scary for me because if it doesn't work out, I would have to do major explaining to my wife why I ripped a perfectly good car apart.

Anyway, this will be my first project (pretty new to this stuff) of this sort and I feel I need to thank the people on this board for their opinions and advice. Also, a special thank goes out to RODSRSR (great guy as well) for putting up with all of my stupid questions.

More pics to come as Jimmy gets more into it.

If that is a 72 why is the oil filler in the engine compartment?

Sounds like a cool project.

I think the general consensus is that 40's are too small for a 3.2L, but you should ask around I'm not the expert a lot of other people are. I believe most would recommend selling the webers and buying a set of PMO 46's for a 3.2L car.

I did a little reading of old Up Fixin Der Porsche today, and read an article about a 3.0L engine that is modified by going to 3.2L and carburation. Here is what Bruce Anderson said in regards to carburated 3.2L engines, "Our experiences with this 3.2L 911 engine reinforced my opinion that the 40IDA Webers are a much better choice for a street engine than the larger carburetors." (pg. 90 of Upfixin #7)

I know I have heard others suggest the 46's on a 3.2L engine here, but I assume it depends on what you want to do with the engine. If it is a full out track car 46's may be better, for a street/track car 40's may be better. I'm really not an expert but I wanted to update you on the newest information I had. I'd get in touch with a couple experts to see what they thought. Bruces opinion stated above was made around 1984 - 1986 so he may have changed that since then.

About the cost: Haven't settled on a number yet due to the little bits and pieces.

About the oil filler: From what I know from the PO, when the 3.0 went in, they decided to use the later oil tank and thus the inner oil access. I'd probably convert it back if I can find a 72 tank.

Thanks for the carb info.

Like other projects on here, I have a bad feeling this isn't going to be the end of the tinkering.

A 3.2 with custom SW chip, and 1 5/8's headers w sport muffler is a great trouble free motor. I would have a hard time giving up the civility of the EFI. It has not bad habits or transition issues and is more efficient getting much better gas mileage.

A 3.0 with carbs for the most part should be an equal in power to a EFI 3.2.

I defer to the experts.

I have a 1973 with a 3.2 Absolutely no way I'd switch to carb's. The Motronic works great and the car starts every time, (hot or cold) no flooding and the throttle response is superb.

You think there is going to be a big difference between the 3.0 and the 3.2?

Motronic it is. Thanks for all the input.

VinceQN, I think he had a couple of 3.2's when I talked to him.

Poorsch, since the 915 trans I bought from Jimmy last weekend probably came out of your car, what can you tell me about how it shifted and sounded? If you can PM me, I'd appreciate it.
