3.6 conversion cat/muffler suggestions w/993 headers

My planning for putting a 1992 3.6 in a '84 Carrera includes using 993 headers (w/ flanges turned). I dont care about compartment heat.
1. Will the stock 993 cat fit w/ or w/o modification?
2. What muffler configuration might work with this-not trying to get more hp, just trying to keep the muffler costs under $500.

If you don't need heat, then I would sell the 993 heat exchangers and pick up a set of headers that are designed to work with stock-style 2-in, 2-out mufflers (e.g. George's European Racing Headers). I had 993 HEs on my car up until yesterday. I went through 2 custom mufflers, and neither of them suited my needs (reasonable sound + good flow), and that was without trying to squeeze in cats. But if you want to stick with the 993 HEs, I recommend you find a very competent exhaust fab shop and tell them to build you what you need.

Do a search with the user name Bill Verburg(*edited by WV) and the word headers, and you'll see his solution with an inexpensive muffler. If you need to pass smog, you'll need cats, too, and I'm sure a search will find examples of that.

Before you jump to headers without heat exchangers, take a look at the long recent thread of guys who went that route to save money and are now twisting themselves into knots in order to get warm air for defrosting and heating.

I only use the 993 manifolds on my 993, I use B&B headers w/ 964 heater tubes & Flowmaster muffler on my 993 engine in a '76
