Engine Drop Money Shot...
No matter how many times I do this, it's still exciting to get to this point:

How does the removal of a Boxster compare to our air cooled 911's? Any significant issues? BTW, does the forward tilt of the body position on the jacks cause you any concern?

I always wanted to use blocks like that so that I didn't have to pull my rear bumper.
Are the blocks likely to crumble under the weight? If so, what about using wood?

+1 on the concrete blocks. At the very least I would use a peice of 1/4" plywood on top to absorb the stress along the contact points between the edges of the jack stands and the concrete. Personally I dont think they would "crumble" but they could crack if the stands were to shift. the edge of the stand would be like a Karate Chop on the blocks, a "knife edge" we call it.
On another note I am impressed to see that our CEO still does his own engine removal. Way to go Wayne.

I doubt if Wayne's flat blocks would do more than crack. Hollow concrete blocks are not to be used.
Wood is fine. Plywood is very good. In fact, as he said, plywood in a concrete sandwich would most likely be fine. |

I'm sure Wayne is sorry he posted this picture now.
I build high rise buildings in NYC, so I feel somewhat qualified to offer an opinion. The concrete bricks Wayne used (called pancakes by the masons) are very good in compression. However, they are not designed to take a point load which is what the jack stands are doing to them. They could crack from the shear load put on them. Putting plywood on top of the bricks helps. A cut piece of plank would be better. The safest way would be to do it the way we support the base of scaffolds. Cut a few squares of planks, stack them up and put the jack stands on that.

I agree re the concrete blocks - a big chunk of wood beam is also easier to move around.
Wayne -- your jack stands are mis-matched! |

Wood Wood Wood!! No CBS. cut yourself a 2 dozen 2x12x18's... works like a champ and you can vary the heights as needed for all your projects. Bevel the edges at 45 deg. and you can make wood ramps. Cake!
-Michael P.S. Boxsters are SOOOOOOoooo cheap these days!

Wayne's getting spanked on his own forum. I say ban them! By the way, concrete blocks are scary.

How does one become the CEO of a Porsche parts warehouse, own a Boxster, a 911, and a 959, and not have a lift in his garage?
