Audio system

I'm buying door speakers, and Im uncertain of the correct size because the ones that were in there have been replaced at some point. The hole seems like 6.5", but Id like to be sure before I get them.

Can anyone confirm or deny this?

Also, could anyone make a recommendation for which brand to buy? I am looking at these:

Morel Maximo 6 1/2 inch 2 way component system | eBay

Im thinking of putting the amp in the smugglers box, or under the passenger seat, and a flat subwoofer under the driver seat, but I'm no expert and never done this before so if anyone has a better idea I'd be delighted.

I have also heard that I don't need more than 500watts....?

If there is an existing thread on this subject, could someone send me a link?

i just bought some Critical Mass 6.5 coaxials in the car. these things are carbon fiber and sound amazing. they are 700 a pair new, i found them on ebay for 250.
i would look for those or maybe some hertz 6.5 or focal k2, if you want something really nice. for the amp ive got a ARC Audio 125.4. its tiny and powerful and really clean and pure sounding. those morels are awesome as well. look for a good deal on the best **** made instead of buying so so **** brand new

What car do you drive? I know the door speakers in my 88 3.2 are 5.25", and they can't be deep or you will have to start cutting into the trim and / or ditch the rain covers.

Its this 1976 2.7 911S: "Scoundrel", not Outlaw...

It is being fully retrimmed, so the door cards will be made to fit the speakers, not the other way round.

RW, you do burn the midnight oil. Hopefully it's not 'her indoors' snoring that keeps you up so late Dying to see how your project turns out. What's your target finish date?

The holes in the door are for 6.5, most of the precut holes in the door panels are for 5.25. I bought 5.25's for door, and 6.5 for rear shelf (Infinity Kappas) , but am going to switch them. Have already fitted the speakers and they fit in the door with no depth issues.

Porsche intended the holes to be used for a 5-1/4 inch speaker. It is possible to fit some 6.5 inch speakers in there, depending on the dimensions of the individual speaker you choose. All decent speaker manufacturers will give you dimensioned drawings, it's up to you to use your head and figure out if they would fit. Some have larger baskets, some are deeper than others, etc. I suggest you buy or fabricate a spacer to fill in the area around the speaker hole, so you have a nice flat surface between the inner door sheet metal and the backside of the door card. There's a guy here on Pelican that makes them, if you don't want to make your own.

I managed to fit 6.5" speakers in my '75. I did install a 1/2" thick spacer between the door and the door card and surface-mounted the speaker onto the door card.

I installed Boston Acoustics SE65's (back when they still made auto products) - here's a link:

Boston Acoustics US)

You might compare the stated size of these against whatever you're looking to purchase. I think I had room for another ~3/4" of depth or so in the door.

She said "how did he know about my snoring?"

The project is going great and the trim guys are picking it up from the paint shop next week. Hopefully it will be finished by the end of January, but there is no rush and the trim guys are perfectionists.
