Thumbs up The ultimate Head Unit for your 911

What makes this thing great is how good it looks when it's off. I have the old school model in my car now and when it's off it look like a stock radio delete.
This thing has everything but the kitchen sink . . . and gps (maybe the next model).

One Killer Stereo:

I want one of these really badly. It's the only unit I think I would install in my RS imposter.

I like this one . It has two knobs and white illumination, and can be found for $267. However, it is a little more modern looking.

IMO the best head unit is the one that came from the factory. I am constantly amazed that people will buy a $$$ car and let some zit farmer"expert" at the mega-stereo store into their car with a pair of wire cutters! Again, just an opinion, but when I see aftermarket alarms and bling stereo systems in an otherwise nice car I wonder about the owner. Use your ipod and save yourself from a stereo induced car fire. Sorry guys -didn't mean to rant.

Ray,
Dude . . .
You can be a purist and loose the Ac and Stereo and say that is the way the Good Doctor intended it to be. Soon there won't be CDs or DVDs and possible FM radio. What will you do with that useless head unit in a daily driver? I personally have converted most of my audio collection (which is huge) to mp3 format (320bps of course). The old head units just don't get it done.
And I wouldn't categorize all of the stereo installers the way you do. There are many artists in that field. Some that install a monster sounding system that you can't even see. That is a real talent.
I guess it just depends on your use of the car. I drive mine to work. I want to be comfortable on the long straight stretches and I want all of it off during the fun curvy portions.

Technology has changed a lot since 1987. I think updating to a newer head unit isn't a bad idea at all. Actually, I'm considering this one:

Hey...I'm just sayin'.... I don't doubt there are many "artist" installing stereos. I'm saying that as a potential buyer of a car I'd much rather see an unmolested car. I've known owners of toasted cars that swore the "guys really knew what they were doing". I admit that the factory is usually a few years behind current (US) stereo tastes and for an audiofile I understand the importance of a nice system. It's a free country, dude...just my $.02 worth. Now you guys got me feeling geezerly- I think I'll go shave my ears.

I can't stand the way many of today's head units look in our cars. Aesthetically they just don't fit in my opinion.

After an exhaustive search of reasonably priced Blaupunkt and Becker units, I came up with the Blaupunkt Miami CD127. This unit has the right, simple, original equipment look, CD and an AUX input jack for my pod.

I got mine NOS on fleabay for $100.

Hey Ray, dude, don't feel bad....

I got my first 911 back in '74 when I was 19. Back then I went through the the car stereo phase like most young guys do and over the years since I've probably spent enough on car audio to pay for a whole other 911. As I got older though I changed, as many of us do. The last time I spent money on car audio it was to replace a newly installed Alpine head unit (by the PO) in my '73 with a period correct Frankfurt. Let 'em have their fun. I still enjoy music but for me there are a lot better things to spend money on in Porsche world....I shaved my ears this morning....

Todd, nice pick

I've been very happy with the Eclipse unit I have in my '88. I added a nice 4 channel amp bridge to 2 with some MB Quart speakers and it's better than the sound in my brand new A4...which is not bad at all.
The Eclipse has no method to connect my ipod so that's a requirment if I upgrade.
Got to have decent tunes when stuck in traffic...revving the engine gets a little old.

Targa Todd, have you been able to find anywhere that sells this head unit? I can't even find it on eBay.

jonbot,

They don't make them anymore. I think they are from the late 90's. I found one after watching ebay for a couple of months. Put in a search that emails you when one becomes available. In the couple of months I looked, I probably saw 5 used units before I hit the lottery and found the NOS one.

Good luck,
Todd

That is why I like this one. It doesn't have a look when it's off.

Tom,
Don't misinterpret my post - I agree this one looks perfect. Just about all others are too colorful, flashy, etc. for our cars. You just can't beat blank black in this case!

I agree with Tom - stereos should be heard and not seen.

Here's some of pics of an older Sony unit I have. Even when on, the display turns off unless you use the small wireless remote to changes stations, tracks on the 10-disc changers and/or volumn/tone controls. The speakers are on (tweeters)/under (midrange) the dash (Moch-1 enclosure), 4X10 two-ways on the rear shelf (Clover enclosure) and a Panasonic powered suboofer under the passenger seat.

Kinda old school but I got an 80gig iPod Classic for XMas. Now I just have to figure out how to hookup the iPod and load my music on it.
