the rear glass on a 1980 911sc during the installation process; the trim for the window is it installed in the gasket and the gasket ; trim installed on the glass as a unit or the gasket installed on the glass then the trim installed in the gasket which seeems more difficult. thanks in advance

I installed the gasket on the window, and then the trim into the gasket. It isn't too difficult if the trim isn't all bent up. Check the shape of the trim on the bare window before installing the gasket.

What Scott said: gasket on window first, then trim, then install as a unit onto car.
I used lots of dishwashing soap to lube the groove for the trim. Be sure to leave a gap between the left and right side trim pieces at both the top and bottom. It can get a bit tedious to pop the trim into the gasket but work slowly along the trim use your thumbs on the inside of the gasket to help seat the trim.

One of the tricks to do this is to insert one end of the glass/seal ass'y on to the lip and make sure you shove it all the way down. Another is to have another person that can keep pressure from the outside as you rope it in. On the windshields, we start by shoving the big end down, but I assume I'd shove the rear down and rope the rear glass towards the top. As you rope, it tends to pull the glass away from the initial set, so you have to constantly work it back down as you go. This makes the top pull in much easier. I guess it can be done in either direction.
Having a suction cup really helps. I couldn't have done my windshield by myself w/o one. |
