964 Dash in 88 911
How hard is it to adapt a 964 dash to an 88 911. They look similar. Did not see a post where this had been done.

Saw a similar thread recently; someone replied that replacing the dash requires removal of the windshield. Sounds like a total PITA

Mine is an 89 911 and the dash can be removed with the windscreen in. I think you'll find that if the demister steel vent near the windshield (on the inside) is one long piece and not two separate parts then once you unscrew it you'll see that it can be done.
As for fit I replaced mine with a later dash from either a 964 or it could have been out of a 993. (See end caps in photo). In one of the photos you can see the piece of leather (arrowed) which covers the edges of the dash board. This is a sign of the later dash. The older versions tuck deeply under the windscreen rubber. In the other photo you can see (arrowed) the unusual end caps in the dash which make me think it's from a later model. Anyone out there know what their significance is? By the way, the car was a German delivery ROW left hand drive which I converted to right hand drive, before you start scratching your heads at the photos. ![]()

My reason for asking is that I have an 88 with a cracked dash, and dash replacement is on the future list. I have been watching sales for a good deal on a dash, and found a nice one from a 964. It seems nice dashes are hard to come by. I thought that if I could get a good deal on the 964, I would store it till I am ready, provided it is a project a novice can handle. Pulling the glass and gauges doesn't scare me, but I don't want it to look odd if I have to make the 964 fit,if that makes sense. I did run across a post using the search where there was a company that would recover an existing dash in leather. That may be another option.

A 964 dash will fit. With the exception of some minor changes in the end caps, the dashes and mounting points remained unchanged from '86 though the last of the 993's in '98.
On your '88, there is no need or benefit in removing the windshield to R&R the dash. 87 Dash pad removel help Tim |

My car has a leather dash from a 964 Turbo. I didn't do the install, but I believe the basic dash piece is the same shape from 65-89. The trick is that you have to accommodate the vents, which have changed over the years -- so there's some cutting. Unless you're a masochist, the glass has to come out in order to do it.

The under dash 'knee protection' on the 964 is not very comfortable in comparison to the older style dash. At least that is my experience, but it might be a size (I'm 5'7") personal driving position thing.
