Clock not working and I don't care if if gets fixed. New gauge?
What can I put there? Amp and volt meter? No special wires would be needed, right?
Anyone commission No. Hollywood Speedo or others to build such an animal? Other suggestions? |
935 boost gauge!
|
I'm planning on using the clock hole for 3 fuel psi gauges. I run 10 psi to regulator. So 1 before filter, 1 after filter, and one after regulator to monitor 3.5 psi.
I already have volts, EGT, CHT covered. there is a pelicanhead making custom VDO gauges. I don't have more info with me now. |
If it was me, I would put in a volt gauge, cylinder temp temp gauge, and maybe a shift light.
|
I had a gauge made....alt and cht. Aircraft company cost me $85. Trying to remember who it was....CRS Syndrome.

I don't need a shift light. I graduated to being and old man driver. It's a lot cheaper that way. ;) Mike, I'd like the new gauge to match the existing. |
CHT? There's a ring that seats under a spark plug. Thermocouple, then there's a power and a ground wire. Simple hook up.
|
Right, I ran those on my karts. Didn't even need power. I guess I'll have to call No. Hollywood and see if they can integrate an Autopower gauge into the Porsche gauge face.
Any other ideas on what instruments that would be beneficial? I think the volt meter is a good one. I know Ron would agree. |
The "Show me your race car dash" thread on that forum has some good ideas and examples.
Westach can make up just about anything you want. I have a 6-cylinder selectable CHT in my clockhole. Other useful gauges are voltage, fuel pressure, transmission temp (I tapped my filler plug to accept the sensor) and, of course, boost. Some people have used a Ford circular vent in that spot for more ventilation. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1187302034.jpg |
Power and ground is for the gauge light, Milt.....
|
volt gauge is very important especially with an over voltage situation when regulator goes kaput. Idiot light won't come on.
I had a Westach dual CHT on my console pluged into cylinder 2 & 5 For the dash I want a VDO look so I found this pelicanhead dong custom gauges http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/447820-replacement-oil-temperature-gauge-face-temperature-values.html Quote:

Most gauges can be customized to blend into the VDO theme by someone. Some gauges aren't critically important and could easily be used on the console. Things like oil temps, even CHTs for track guys maybe should be placed in line of sight.
Westach was on my console http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1235959356.jpg another Westach http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1235959472.jpg I think this is mikez's ? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1235959593.jpg my old console with volt meter over a dual CHT http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1235959690.jpg my present console http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1235959788.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1235959808.jpg |
There is a thread about this on the racing forum. One of the general consensus answers was a low oil pressure warning light. Very handy if you track the car. Just my $.02

hey Milt..
I have another bright idea. awhile back there was a thread about gauge engine monitoring [including my bs] in which Grady Clay listed the newest tech with suggested sites. Point is that the monitor itself and I guess processor is becoming less expensive [ie: cheap] and small. For a few hundred you could have a 40-100hr trick install party. Make it acceptable to the clock hole. also member bell also did some trick install there.. don't remember details? I like the idea of using a nice shunt for an amp gauge. How about a 4 gauge analog VDO in that hole? Amp & volt @ 9 or 3 o'clock.. depending on how your eyes hit the volt needle. [Volt more important] Fuel pump psi monitor at 12 or 6 And some kind of heat sensor on the alternator regulator. I think they start to cook at 200F ? or anything else you could dream up |
I was making custom gauges as a hobby for a while. The volt meter gauge is for sale if your interested. Made from a 2 5/8" Autometer gauge fit into an old gas gauge (same size as the clock). I also fit a 2 1/16" vdo voltmeter into the gas gauge and retained the oil level gauge.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1236009688.jpg

How about an aritificial horizon indicator from an old airplane? Great conversation piece!
|
I just had an Air Fuel Ratio/Boost meter installed. Actually, it's a PLX multi-function gauge that can display info from up to 32 sensors and can be reconfigured easily with a PC.
On the negative side, the first AFR sensor arrived broken so I am wondering about the future reliability and support quality from the manufacturer. I plan to add a turbo after a few weeks of practicing fuel tweaks on my CIS system. The last thing I want is to go lean under boost. |
We haven't done one of these in a while, but they are agood wat to add more info to your dash
