bench testing a 901 tranny. Possible???

Can anyone tell me if and how I can benchtest my tranny? By benchtesting I mean see if it shifts alright.

Should you be able to move the shift rod by hand to change gears? (while gently rotating the input shaft) I have tried this, but to no avail.

Also, on the shift rod, the indent where the pin from the shift coupler sits, is in the center position, does that mean that i'm in either 2nd or 3rd gear ?(5 speed 901 tranny)

Need to get it in neutral at least, but want to see if I can shift.

Thanks a lot!
