I'll gladly share some numbers, especially since I've gotten several PMs asking about it lately.

All of the body work, minor rust repair, panel fitment, fiberglass work, front end modification, paint and prep, and window installation was the biggest chunk at approximately $14,000. Most of that was labor, because all I did myself was the preliminary disassembly, and reassembly after it came back from the paint shop.

Interior was about $4,500, including the seats which were $3,000 by themselves. Again, I did all of this work myself, no labor cost.

Window and door brightwork trim was about $2,800. $1800 of that was restoration to brand new condition at King of Trim in California. The rest was purchasing used pieces that are NLA. I installed all the door window trim and door handles, the body shop installed all the big glass pieces.

Another $1,000 for Bosch Euro H4s, Carrera RS decal set and various odds and ends. I did all that.

Then $1,500 to Harvey Weidman for the stunning quality RSR restoration of the Fuchs.

All of the suspension components (I mean everything) was upgraded prior to the commencement of this project, except the torsion bars which have since been upgraded to 22/29. I don't include those costs, roughly $5k in parts, as part of the project.

no engine work or tranny work was done. They are completely stock and stayed in the car from beginning to end.

So, all told, this was close to a $24,000 project, and 100% cosmetic. Someday I'll do some engine and tranny upgrades, but they're both too healthy to break open yet.

I've heard of some of these projects costing more than double what I spent. All depends on how close of a "replica" you want. I just wanted a really nice looking tribute that was still an '86 under the skin. I am absolutely delighted with how it turned out.

Thank you for taking time to post this. I truly appreciate the details.

It's not cheap by any means but a lot cheaper than a real RS.

Enjoy your great car.

Can anyone give me an idea what the entire backdate project ended up costing, not including the cost of the original doaner car? I'm considering this option and need to get a realistic number before I start.

thanks

Remember the golden rule of 3 X 2= three times the budget & twice
the amount of time to completion.

I just signed up to Pelican Parts so that I could commend you on a great build and detailed thread.

I'm a the very beginning of a journey to backdate a 911 and this has been inspirational.

Thanks. Best of luck in your project. There will be frustrations to deal with, but overall it was a very rewarding experience.

I'm sure there will be plenty of frustrations. Trying to find the right base is proving difficult enough.

I'm currently living in Melbourne but will be heading back home to Ireland in the 2/3 years and then hope to have the majority of the work done in the UK. Cars here are generally in better condition than at home due to the less harsh winters, no salt on the roads etc. However, they command a higher price - about $35,000 for a 3.2 in mediocre shape.

Sorry for the hijack, and once again, your car is a credit to you.

3.2 to 3.4 ST backdate / Outlaw

Beautiful build....this thread was one of the inspirations for me to do a backdate.

I've sent a car to Nick Miss at early911.co.uk for an ST/Outlaw backdate, link below:

87 3.2 to ST "Outlaw"
