2.7L Engine Rebuilt - can I get 150k miles out of her
I have a 1974 911 with the infamous 2.7L Engine. Now that I've done a high quality rebuild with the recommended fixes/upgrades (new case certs to solve the head stud pulling problem), Air box relief valve, 11 blade fan, Carrera timing chain tensionsers, and Carrera auxiliary oil cooler, can I get 150k miles out of this engine? More? Anyone with real world epxeriance getting that many miles out of thier 2.7L rebuilt engine? Thanks

In the day, the guides were soft, about 60K and needed a top end. Guides now, in excess of 100k miles.
Started finding 77s with studs pulled at about 70 to 80K, sometimes they wouldnt hold after the topend. In the day we didnt want to admit that the studs were a problem but they were. Went from doing a top end to a full rebuild plus dilivars and machine work for another $500 to$700. like there was no end to it. Now days there is so much written, change the oil and you should get the miles Bruce |

I have a 75. Bought it at 175,000 miles from the original owner. It was rebuilt at 136,000.
It now has 260,000. Just a few drips underneath, but I feel it is ready for a rebuild. I would say 100,000 to 125,000, no problem. |

ya know, it seems kinda funny, these cars were/are expensive but here we are talking about "hoping" to get 125k maybe 150k before a rebuild and top ends at 60k.

hopefully piston wear will be the weak point
if so CIS pistons should be good for 100k miles 2.7RS pistons are forged and only cost a few $ more

Thanks, all. BTW, the RS pistons were part of the rebuild. I've also heard that I probably can not rebuild this engine again because of the installation of the inserts (to solve the stud pulling problem) and the boring challenges caused by there now being less "meat" on the case. Any truth to this?
I am very happy with this car ergo the question about the 150K+ life on the engine. |

Competition Engineering in Bodfish Calif will be able to tell you if it can be rebuilt I use RS pistons. Have 80k miles on rebuild and everything is super. Heads will need 2 or 3 valve jobs before pistons wear.

RoninLB,
I called "Walt" at Competition Engineering and he comes down to Monrovia, CA from time to time so we can set up a meeting if/when I need his extended opinion. For now, based on what I shared with him, I'm in real good shape. Thanks, agian. |

You're right, but don't forget--that's for the mag case, 5 blade, hot running 2.7s. Just about everyone had problems w/ their engines back in the mid 70s. Many Pelicans now have 2.7s w/o the emission equipment, w/ 11 blade fans, oil coolers, improved valve guides etc etc that contribute to greater longevity nowadays.
