Electrical problems

Power windows on my 89 911/930 have stopped working. Started a few weeks back with not being able to use the passenger side switch. Window worked from driver side. Then the right one stopped working completely. Now the left one is not moving at all! Fuse is good and interior light go down in power when i hit any of the switches, up or down. So there is power on, but no movement. Thankful for any tips.

Erik,

Well, I just got in myself after removing about 30' of wire the previous owner installed in my 86 911...

According to the Bentley service manual, page 970-42:

You have a problem on both sides so I would suspect a problem fairly high in the circuit. First things first, turn the key on and make sure you have power available at the top and bottom of the fuse. Check with a light if you have one. Simple test from both sides of the fuse to ground.

The more troubling aspect is the potential of excessive current draw as indicated by the dimming of your lights. The windows need to know where they are at in terms of top and bottom to work. This is usually done with switches or a counting mechanism in the motor. The dimming of the lights is most likely because the window motor is trying to turn and it can't. Test the power first and then we'll go on.

Anyone know how the window regulates its travel?

Gordon

When it won't go any further it stops and draws more current.

Here is a pictorial of how the switches work.
