I think Bob is comparing the lower end Dynamat. The better version is Extreme which is rubber based. Should not have asphalt smell.

Should have added this on my first post. I removed all the original wool type insulation and replaced it with aircraft closed cell foam. "Aircraft Spruce" a aircraft parts outlet for the general aviation community sells the foam in various thicknesses and it is lightweight and resistant to fire (remember used in aircraft). Pricing is reasonable, it is easy to cut and did I mention lightweight. So far I am pleased and I have a sport exhaust system on my SC.

Jim... don't they call that wrgrace product "*****-o-thane" ?? I believe it got this name as it implies how tricky it is to apply... i.e. once it cticks to something, even itself, it is stuck for good.
A later post of the aircraft spruce material sounds interesting also...
Bob

Bob, you're right about that. It's a product that I love and hate. It works great for what it is supposed to do - but I hate installing it. Especially if it's above 60 degrees, once it is stuck to something, it is there for good.

Sounds awesome. Mind telling us how much you ordered & the thickness you used? Thanks.

It's been a while but I think I ordered about 3 yards of 3/8 and a lesser amount of 1/4 inch. I may have used 1/2 in the rear seat wells and back bulkhead. I had someone help me as I'm not a limber as I use to be and working around the roll bar made it even more fun. "Aircraft Spruce" uses a 1 800 number with warehouses on both the East and West coast. Nice people and very reasonable. They will send you a catalog quickly. I kept the thickness at a minimum as my overall goal is to keep vehicle weight down.

Thanks for the reply F4. I'll be able to remove the rollbar for my install.

flat

my 2 cents...
You could also consider the use of rigid expanded foam panels. Lightweight, dense can easily be shaped and glued in to position, if the right foam is selected then also is fire rated, thermally efficient and can deaden sound ( small amount)

I have a related question (sorry for taking this slightly off track). I like the RS look, but also the vinyl/leather rear shelf. Has anyone done an RS style look, but with vinyl instead of carpet for the rear shelf? I quite fancy trying this, but would see if it has been done before?

'Stormaster's interior is like that. I thought I saved a pic of it but can't find. And that's how I'm going to do it. Infact I'm going with the smooth back instead of the factory looking pleats. Try a search I know he's posted pics of it on a thread.

I lined mine with 1/2 inch closed cell foam that I got bought from a small distributor here in town that had a zillion types available -- many in stock.

The stuff I used weighs about 1 oz per square foot. I wasn't concerned with noise, but I was with weight. I don't remember the cost, but I've got all the records. I'll be out of town until next Wednesday, but I can get you all of the details when I get back.

I didn't cut or grind any of the seat or panel mount tabs and bosses, I just built up the foam and covered them before adding the carpet on top. You've got to cut the foam into jigsaw-like sections and glue it in place. I used 3m super adhesive spray for both the foam and the carpet -- It's not going anywhere.

I did it in the summer, so cold wasn't a problem. The carpet was perlon, so it was pretty easy to strech once the glue was on it. A hammer and duct tape covered
section of 1x2 were used to encourage the carpet to conform to the tighter shapes. You can see them in one of the pics below.

I also made a backing for the package shelf out of corregated plastic sheet, and glued the carpet to it. The shelf is held in place by the original strap loops, and a strip of velcro on the back side of the flap that extends down to where the seat back used to be.

There are a few pics below. I don't have a good finished shot, but I'm in Denver so you're welcome to stop by and see it in person if you like. I've also got some leftover foam scraps so you can see it first hand.

Good luck.

Joe

Joe, is this the black perlon they offer?

Shane the quoted post was about the foam lining that I sourced locally, not the Perlon. The Perlon in the pictures is a carpet kit from Original Fit Interiors.

Sorry Joe, guess I was not very detailed in that request, bu I think you answered the question. Your perlon install looks great in the pictures. Bob and appbiz told me he can get it in the gray, and in a black. I see you got yours from the Original Fit - do you remember the color other than the obvious black. I only ask in case they have multiple shades.

Thanks

Buckterrier mentioned my interior....I think I am going to redo it with some underlayment....not sure I can re-use my carpet or not...if not I will get another set from Apbiz...anyway...here is a shot of the rear with the stock parcel shelf intact.

It was just 'Black'. I don't remember any other colors.

Question guys...

What you do with those deck tips when installing RS carpet? Just cut or bend them?

Thank you, -Y.
