This is a very common problem. Goto www.odometergears.com for the part, and do a search on this site for everything you ever wanted to know about the isuue.

I fixed mine last month, not all that hard to do.

Mine stopped a couple weeks ago - sent it to Hollywood Speedometer and had it back within a week!

I used www.odometergears.com too and did the DIY fix. I think it cost me $12 to repair and maybe a few hours time. The hardest part is separating bezel from the gauge to get to the guts. you have to be very slow and patient, or you can damage the bezel beyond repair. It was worth my time to save the money since my car was down for the winter at the time. I think NHS quoted me around $150 to do the repair, not including shipping.

Another satisfied DIY'er here. I think I paid like $25 shipped for the gear a couple years ago.

I replaced that gear about a month ago.
I bought it from Palo Alto Speedometer $20.
Works fine now.
