Anybody else upgrade from a 964 to a 911 (3.2)

I had two C4's in the past until I bought my present 3.2. Anybody else done this ?
I guess the other way around is more common.

I now drive a 1978 SC... I used to own a 1992 C2...

I lost that as part of a divorce settlement. I've never looked back

Why the change from a 964 to a 3.2? I have a 3.2, and am thinking of looking for a 964, but would like to know the advantages of a 3.2 versus a 964.

Give me reasons to never want to look for another 911!
Hey, I love her, but I always think the grass is greener on the other side.

The 3.2 is a much simpler car. Easier to fix and in my opinion more fun to drive.
Manual as opposed to power steering and generally lighter. It's like comparing an RS to an S from the seventies. Then if you decide to "back date' the car it's always a viable option with a 3.2. (or SC as in my case)

My 964 was a great car but I never felt confident doing work on it myself. I love my SC... It's a great car to work on. Although in my experience I must say Porsche's don't suffer fools.

You could backdate a 964... and I'm sure it has been done. But it seems to make more sense to back date the impact bumper cars.

Wurls, here's a good thread for you. You really need to drive a (C2 manual coupe) back to back with a 3.2 and then make up your mind.

I got tired of all the electrical crap = sensors - battery drain - seemed like it was always something that was tripping that damn ! warning.

It was (964) a fast car though - when you were going 110 it felt like 70 - conversely it's the other way around in the 911.

IMO the 911 is a more "raw" fun driving experience. Plus my 964 leaked like a Great Dane on a walk. Nothing money couldn't fix - but why when I could own a 911 with a G50.

wurls 03-13-2009 04:06 PM

Thanks for the input guys! The 3.2 does seem like a better choice than 964, for the type of person (like me) that hates the thought of there being an electrical nightmare waiting to happen with a 964. True, the 964 might be snappier from torque, but if you live in a place like me where you're lucky to have one place that can fix a Porsche, the simpler the 911, the better.

My 1988 3.2 Carrera is now going to stay with me!

Cheers guys!

Carreras are not immune to electrical issues. You want a car you can fix by the side of the road? Get an early carb'd T. 70 will feel like 110.

I agree. I love my 3.2 and haven't had any serious problems; but every day or two someone posts on this board with a 3.2-related running/starting problem (bouncy idle, etc).

3.2s are full of electronic sensors, but there's no diagnostic capability.
