Lightbulb The answer to the age old question... What size of spacers to use on an SC

All,

Well, after much polling and lots of opinions I bit the bullet and took a chance that my info (and mesurements) were correct...

The answer is....

1" front and 2" rear work just great.

Will let you all know if I have a rubbing issue, but looks good so far!

Randy,

You might of answered this before, but what size fuchs are you running? I have 6 & 7's x 16. Two inches sure does seem way too much back there! I definitely need spacers but I'm waiting to see when my wallet will permit me to get some 8's....or even 9's if it'll fit.

John,

I have a 78SC, now running 9X17X40X255 in the rear, it is snug, but it fits.. Running the old tires incase there is some rubbing.

On the front 7X17X50X205 (my fenders are rolled in the front, but not in the rear)
plenty of room.

I will snap a picture or twwo later and post them....

Now wheel set two will go to the powder coating shop to become black....

Randy, how much did you spend for the spacers, and did you get my email?

Tom,

Just sent you a message, the spacers are about $300+ (better bodies were the cheapest)

FWIW, my car has factory 6&7 x 16 Fuchs and the 21mm spacer is all that would fit on the rear. Even then, I had to roll the left rear fender.

In the front, 5/8" spacers are too wide. I'm wondering if 1/4" spacers would work. The point is, with my wheel size, there is not as much extra room in the back as it looks. The car looks MUCH, MUCH better with the spacers.

I would agree, if you fill the space, it looks tons better.... IMHO

Also, the 993 wheels are flush look (unlink the Fuchs that are recessed mount) so you need larger spacers to make up the differance.

I have 1" on the rear and 1/4" on the front with 225X50X16 on 7" Fuchs (rear) and 205X55X16 on 6" Fuchs on the front. I don't see how you could go any wider.

Here are the pics, see stats above

Here is a view from the side at an angle..

Here is the view from the front, low down

This is the rear looking up, think there maybe a little more room...

Hope this saves someone the time I spent on research... Enjoy...

The confusion on this thread is because Randy is talking about spacers to adapt late offset 993 wheels to an earlier car (different offset). You could never get spacers that big behind old offset fuchs and stock SC fenders.

But I also have 993 wheels on my Carrera and I used about 1 inch front and about 1 1/8 inch rear. No way 2 inch would have fit the rear of my car. I have 17x245x40 on back.

Seems there is a lot of variance from one car to the next. Camber adjustment can make a big difference too (close to an inch).

So if you are considering this switch, make your own measurements. Use Randy and my figures as reference points only.

Yea, what Chuck said...

I did alot of checking.

It helps if you have a friend close by with spacers you could use to test.

I wish I had that, I would not have sweated this so much...

The 2" spacers in back do a nice job of making those wheels fill up those fender wells so perfectly on your car as well as mine. They seem to follow the contours of the flares much better.

It also seems to give the car a later appearance.

Rode her a bit hard today, to a few good bumps (I ment to take some, but hit some un-expected ones HARD)

NO RUBBING! So just some hard cornering to go and I think she will be just fine.

Can't wait to burn these Dunlops off so I can get some REAL tires....

Put the C2 Turbo Cup wheels on a friends SC with the 2" rears. It was way too wide. The 1" fit perfect. 1.5" would have fit, but would have been close. I have to agree with the above statement that you need to experiment to see for sure. Every car is indeed different and camber does make a big difference clearance-wise. BTW, car looks great Randy!

Thanks Tyson,

Yes, went round and round, I did not think that the 255's would fit, but there is just enough negitive camber to get them in there.

I may drop down to 245's when I replace them, will have to see how these last with this deg of camber.

I had 255/40 when I first put them on too. They fit.

But if you check the specs you will find the 255/40 are a little bigger diameter than stock. I didn't like that.

Plus I think the 255s look a little too wide on an SC flared car. I know some people think there is no such thing as too wide, but for my money the 245/40 is better proportioned to the car.

I replaced with 245/40. I also like that little extra margin for clearance especially since my car is lowered.

Yes Chuck,

I will be lowering the car, so that is an issue, but will have fun burning off these first

Then I will put some REAL tires on the car.
