How do you remove inside mirror on 68 912

I was given a 68 912 targa in very very sad shape. Pretty much stripped of everything good, but does have a few good items on it that I plan to keep. One is the inside rear view mirror. My stupid question is how the heck do you remove it from the windshield frame? I see no screws holding it on so I assume it is glued in place? If that is the case then, wow, that is some strong stuff.

Thanks for your help.

I believe a '68 has a 'pop-off' safety mirror.
Post your question over on the 912 bbs site at 912bbs.org
to get a definitive answer.

Yes, it is a "pop-off" mirror, meaning that if your head were to hit it in a crash it should get out of the way. The mirror snaps into a mounting bracket that is screwed to the roof panel... thats why you can't see any fasteners.

To remove it, hold onto the metal portion of the mirror assembly that runs from the back of the mirror itself up to the roof and push it side-to-side (towards the car doors). This will give you the most leverage to work it free. What you are basically trying to do is compress a spring that is inside there enough so that it will pop out of the mounting bracket. If you can create a gap and get a wedge or putty knife slipped in, that is a good start. It will help you just continue to be able to rock it side to side without having to feel like you need to pull down on it really hard to get it to pop off.

Hope that helps!
