Hi
I am working on an 84 911 and trying to remove the altenator. I have the fan assembly seperated from the shroud and trying to take the complete assembly out far enough so I can remove the wires from the altenator. My question is Do i need to separtrate the altenator from the fan housing while it is still in the car, or is there enough wiring that I can minipulate the whole assembly as one piece out of the car? I looked at the tech article but that looks like an earlier car and the whole assembly in the pictures do not seem to be as deep. Help Fan Aseembly half in and half out.... ------------------

Wow I cant believe it I can actually answer your question. The answer is no, you should be able to pull the alternator/fan assembly far enough out to get the 6 nuts off that hold the cover or shroud on thats covering the wiring, once those are off you can get to the wiring on the back of the alternator disconnect the wires and the alternator/fan will come right out. Once you have them out you can separate them. There is a very good tech article here on replacing the alternator I printed it out before I did mine....good luck

I will try again but as I pull the fan
forward it hits the engine mounts. I try to tip it forward and it hits the top of the shroud... Maybe I am being to cautious with the whole assembly. I will try more tipping and angling and see if I can get to the wires so I can remove the whole assembly as one piece. ------------------

Joe
I think the part you are missing is the removal of the air deflector shroud which covers the wires. From memory you need an 8mm spanner. If you remove the shroud you can slide it down the wires and then remove the wires from the alternator and then the alternator with housing. In order to remove the alternator from the housing get yourself a piece of 4 x 1 timber long enough to fit across the housing. Drill a hole in the centre large enough to clear the alternator shaft and, by tightening the shaft nut onto the timber you will release the alternator. Ther is nothing you can reliably 'tap' so I found this works best. Good Luck Roy |
