Has any other car been modified as much as the 911?
It amazes me sometimes how much people modify their cars and to the extremes they go. It's quite amazing. I mean some cars are transformed into something completely different then what they started as.
Backdating, forward dating, newer engines, older wheels, and it goes on and on. Obiviously because the 911 kept a lot of the same body parts but... Has there been any other car that has been modified so much as the 911 to the extremes we see? Discuss.

any off-road truck. I had an 85 4Runner w/ a Supra engine, custom axles, FJ40 rotors, a 91 master brake cylinder, custom canvas top, Honda seats, Lexus AFM and injectors, custom exhaust, headers, custom bumpers, custom rock sliders, custom body lift, engine lift, transmission lift, custome drive shafts, Chevy springs in the rear, YJ springs in the front, hi stear kit, IFS steering box, Ivan Stewart fenders, etc. about the only thing that was stock was the frame and even that had some customization done to it. All upgrades done by me or my buddy who was a custom fabricator. I left off about 1/2 the mods. all cost me less than a typical engine rebuild on a 911... so unless you're talking a full on race prepped car, there are a ton of cars out there that have been modified far more than most 911's

I think the MINI crowd is right up there.
I got DEEP into mods and had a blast. Even started my "side biz" so that I could offset the racing. If you want to see their world wide forum and see what they are up to look at NAM www.NorthAmericanMotoring.com Lots more than that as well. Look at my website www.WyvernMINI.com ( now renamed www.WyvernMotorsports.com ) to cover more than the MINIs. OR the 4X4 guys are crazy ... Ohh I do that as well SO EXCITED to now be part of the 911 modders!!! ![]()

Honda Civic and Ford Mustang should also get some sort of honorable mention on this list.

MKIV Toyota Supra turbo. I have never seen one (I'm not even joking) that isn't modded pretty seriously.

I don't think there's a Fox bodied Mustang 5.0 that hasn't been modded.

Are you guys forgetting about the VW Beetle? My first car was a 66 Bug. Even today there are aftermarket parts & manufacturers & even OEM replacement parts for the bug than most cars have a right to have! You can get almost anything you want for the BUG.

ive been into third gen rx7s for years. Most owners highly modify their cars. Whether its a large single turbo, or an LS1. I think most of the jap cars are the ones who do more of the aftermarket modifying. the porsche guys tend to stick with the factory modifications.

Lots of top contenders here, but I think #1 has to be the Jeep crowd.
Buying a Jeep is simply the "Starter kit". While the 911 is right up there, there is still a very large percentage of Porsches that are maintained in stock condition, and lots of older ones being restored back to stock. Not so with Jeeps. Outside of a few original military Jeeps, that are basically museum pieces, none are left original, and buyers do not look for stock examples. |

Another thing about the Jeepers- Most of the other cars mentioned above have modifications limited to aftermarket bolt-on parts.
While there are thick catalogs full of available parts for Jeeps, they are often modified with a welder. Lots of custom fabrication in the Jeep world. |

'55-57 Chevy will be up there, the thing w/ 911 is that essentially the same car was built from '69 to '89 though in much smaller #s than cars like the Chevrolets.

Jeep Wranglers, STIs, BMWs, Mercs...all you have to do is get a type of car and you'll find a crowd that likes to switch perfectly working parts with new parts.

We're beginning to stray pretty far afield from the original poster's question. Granted, every car ever made has been at one time or another modded, but he was asking which ones, if any, have been modded in the numbers and to the extent that 911s have. I don't think Fox Mustangs, Minis or Toyota Supras qualify...
