Does the steering wheel move "in and out?" Or "up and down?" Or can you turn the wheel without moving the rack? Check the u-joints and connections by removing the inspection cover in the front trunk, turn the wheel and feel for what's loose. There aren't that many parts to go wrong.

I'm assuming you're talking about the bearing that's in the smugglers box. Play in the steering wheel has nothing to do with that bearing. On my SC, this became worn to the point that it allowed the shaft to move enough that the universal joint would bind. Not good! Replacing it returned everything to normal.
