This past weekend a friend brought his 85 911 over to my garage. The plan was to change his tranny with a rebuilt one from vertex with a 7/31 ring and pinion. Well, 3rd gear makes a loud whining noise upon acceleration, according to vertex third is shot. We are deciding how to deal with this problem. As you know dropping the motors is a PITA, and there is a considerable amount of down time while we send them the tranny to repair it. I think a little compensation on vertex's part might be nice. (maybe a 4 free motor mounts? or a ltd slip :-)
What do you guys think? Dante Oliverio |

I don't think the limited slip idea will fly, but the motor mount one might.

good luck getting compensation from any supplier for your lost labor. it's usually in their warranty statement that they won't pay. it would be purely goodwill on their part. i've lost plenty of labor time over the years due to bad parts. it's just part of being a lowly mechanic.

My personal dealings with vertex were very positive.
I had them install a recon tranny in my Carrera. They did so as priced. After changing the tranny fluid after the 1500 miles, for new swepco, I found a pin/needle from a roller bearing (thanks to you guys successfully identifying the part!). This roller bearing it was descided was more than likely a left over form the removal of the old bearings, However!..... I approched 'Gilberto'- HE IS THE GUY TO SPEAK TO, he was more than willing to take responsibility and he wrote me a warrantee covering the 'bearings' for a further 2 years. I did not want a new tranny as this one was just 'broken in' and this was acceptable for me to ensure no breakdown in that area. I feel (knowing this guy and having spent about $4K there) that you would get more from Vertex with a reasonable approach and as Johnie Walker says attempt to work on their goodwill. They seem reasonable guys 'IF' approached in the right manner, Good luck Rgds Ben |
