Dyno and WHP tread

Not sure if there is one already but figure I would start one.

I went to dyno the Porsche the other day just to see what numbers i was pushing to the wheels and was pretty suprised with the outcome. The car made 228.8whp and 200 ftlbs. The car has:

K&N drop in
Fabspeed Test pipe
Fabspeed Exhaust delete
Steve Wong chip

My search on dyno turned up 20 pages and 482 threads of dyno results, so yes its been done, in a Pam Anderson sort of way.

WOW those are great RWHP numbers out of a 3.2! Did porsche do its HP ratings at the flywheel or rear wheel? B/C based on the numbers you posted I would have thought you had a 3.6 in there considering ~20% loss through the trans.

I am not an expert but from what I have seen the drive train loss is more like 15%.

Unless that is a high compression Euro motor and running 15" Fuchs with light race tires, that sounds a little high. Mine with custom SW and cat bypass came in at 215-217 on two different days. My friend with bassically the same but a sport muffler came in 5 hp higher. Don't get to excited, they all put out close to the same HP when the cat is removed and chiped. I suspect, variations from the mean to the positive side are more attribuited to differances in dynos, not typically the car. Varitions below the mean are typically due to issues with the car like pluged cat, restricted injector, or ...

I was just getting a little jazzed b/c I picked up a 3.2 that I am going to drop into a 69. Based on the factory rating I was thinking something more like 180 or 185 to the rear wheels. Based on your 15% loss ... The engine I bought had great leak down numbers so I was thinking of even throwing in some more aggressive cams too.

So all that in a 2k pound car with 7:31 915 should be loads of fun.

The 3.2 responds well to exhaust and chip changes. With the stock pistons and injection you can not do much with the cams except go a bit past a C2. I am guessing 10hp.

For more dyno runs see: http://www.911chips.com/dyno.html

It was done to the wheels, I know i was so surprised when i heard my first pull was 227.9rwhp, I was honestly not expecting much more than 200. Also the dyno the pulls were done on are known for reading low, which also was crazy to me.

Ya i totally forgot 911chips had dyno charts posted up. Thanks for sending that.

Don't put too much stock in "the number" they can vary from dyno to dyno - but congrats anyway - helps with bragging rights

Exactly. Run the same car on a Mustang Dyno or a Dynojet 248 & you'll get totally different numbers.

The "numbers" & reason for doing a dyno (in my opinion) is to get a baseline, and to see what changes you're making affect the car in what way, and also to be able to get an air/fuel ratio reading during the run to assure you're not going to wash a cylinder or burn a piston.

Use the same dyno shop & similar weather conditions if you can; ideally you make the baseline & changes to the car the same day & re-run. That's pretty much how I did a lot of mine. Tested the factory cat / muffler, fabspeed pre-muffler / factory muffler, fabspeed pre-muffler & Bursch the same day.

FWIW, mine ran 213 whp / 192 wtq on the 3.2L w/ Weltmeister chip. Not bad for an 84. Remember your 88 will be higher than the 84 3.2L as well.

Yes, 15% is what you usually ballpark for a 5-speed manual trans; can be 17-22% for an automatic typically.

Yes, I drive mine as much as possible. If it's >32° & sunny, I've got the top down.

Once chipped there should not be any difference in HP between the years. There can be a difference with the euro high compression car's.

Some dynos though testing at the wheels can be set to compute the HP to the flywheel. Lets put it this way, That would be 267fwhp. There is no way a US 3.2 w just a chip and cat bypass is going to pull that when a euro 3.2 is about 232hp and a 89-94 3.6 is rated at about 250hp.

My car's best pull was 217rwhp with a custom SW chip and cat bypass. I was told the dyno used reads low compared to others. That would be 255fwhp! I suspect I am lucky if I am truly at about 230-235fwhp using factory German sized horses. Otherwise we must just have smaller horses over here.

The curve looks great, but what was the a\f ratio? Also, are these corrected or uncorrected?

My AFRs were at a steady 13.0 then went down a little closer to red line.
