Carburator: What did the old-timer give me?

So I went to the local airport, and one of the retired guys that hangs out there said: "I've got something for ya".
I was coming, and he was going, so he said he would just toss it in my truck.

When I looked later, this is what I found:

So I open up the box:

It has a page of instructions for Corvair, and another page for Porsche.

Anybody familiar with this gizmo?

Old time flowmeter for carbs. They work, there are better ones out there but hey...the price was right.

It allows you to balance the air flow through each carburetor to each cylinder so you can tune your carbs.

That's a classic. MG/Triumph/Healey owners knew it well. These days, I use one of those spherical Synchro-somethings that has a short neck that inserts into the carb. Works great.

It's a uni-syn. It synchronizes your multiple carbs quickly easily and economically.

FYI it also works for MFI. I had one before and had difficulty getting it to work properly. I like the other style much better.

They work extremely well...use one on my 2.4 with Weber 40 IDA's.

I think I paid $25 six or seven years back...you've got a deal!

I have one as well from the MG days. Can't seem to part with a perfectly good tool, even if I don't use it.

I still have that same model from balancing my 912 carbs...I found it to be a pretty good tool.

I've had mine now for over 35 years. Yeah, it's quick and "gets you in the ball park"

I've had two. A crack developed on the plastic tube of both. After that I didn't trust their accuracy.

Watch out how you talk about old timers. That Unisyn and a timing light were about all we had to keep our cars running well.

It has been working for me for more than 30 years. In every multiple carb engine including Webers, MFI plus 2 cycle engines in Jet Skis. Even with a cracked plastic tube. What you are looking is equalization in the air flow through the system, so if a crack develops it will be the same crack for all intakes.

This probably would have been nice when I had a 140 hp Mercury outboard with tripple carbs.
That thing would never idle very long before choking itself.

Being that I WAS young, and the motor was on a 16' flatbottom, my solution was to just not idle- If the engine was running, it was wide-open.

It's kinda suprising I'm alive after owning that boat. There were a couple times I was lucky it came back down right-side-up.
