Spent about an hour on the phone with Jon from EBS. We discussed what to do with my P/Cs.
I have measured my pistons and the ring gap and skirts are fine. Tomorrow I am going to take my clyinders up to the machinist and have him mic the bores of my clyinders. After talking to Jon at EBS, I learned quite a bit about P/Cs. He tends to think that if my cylinders spec out than I get get away with just roughing up the surface with Scotchbrite to seat the rings. John Walker also said he has done this with some success. The replating service they offer would be required if my cylinders have worn into an oval. Thats when he said they take them, strip them, rebuild up the nikasil...and fine hone them. They do this for $750. Another alternative they offer are reconditioned sets of Alusil (devil word around here) P/Cs. I even asked him why he thought Alusil is a four letter word in the Porsche community and he said he thought it was from people trying to re ring them and because the silicon bits in the bores wears off after many miles the new rings never seat properly. And I think he siad you can't run JE pistons in them. But they offer these reconditioned sets for $900 and I can get either the 8:1 or 9.3:1 pistons. |
