Spring Center or Rubber Hub clutch disc?

Well, I am getting that old familiar smell of rubber coming from my clutch housing area when taking on hills, etc., and its hard to tell just how much life I have left in it. Now I have to ask whether the spring loaded unit is better or stick with the original rubber center design. I do not race and I do not drive this old car hard. I am sure many of you have comtemplated the same decision and can already speak from experience on the spring units. May I trouble you for an opinion please. Its a 2.4L '73T. Thanks.

BR,

Unless that clutch disk has been changed before, it is not a rubber-centered disk! Those did not come out until '78 with the SC model.

The 'smell' ... a burnt-phenolic odor is probably due to slippage due to a thinner-than-spec disk. Does it slip on the highway in 5th gear?

A Sachs kit should solve all of your clutch problems, and the same kit is applicable to all '72 thru '86 915's.

Very aggressive starts in my car produce (what I assume is) a similar clutch-slipping smell. My clutch is less than 3000 miles old. But in my case, I've increased the amount of torque that it is coping with.

Warren, I've always assumed that I'd want to switch to a 'perfomance' clutch the next time around. Would a Sachs kit be the smartest way to go?

Jack,

Yes, I think a Sachs 'Power Kit' is probably the way to go in your case. About $140 more than the regular one, but worth it in competition use, or just on Mulholland Drive, too!

Thanks. I am not sure that the latest clutch was rubber centered or not. It does not slip in 5th only seems to smell when I take some steep hills or need to scoot in a hurry around traffic. I have to tell you guys that the 2.4 CIS ain't the fastest rocket around, at least compared to my old SC or even the '74 2.7 I used to drive, but compared to the "E" and "S" the touring version is good for just that. Its still alot of bang for the buck. Thanks.
