Intro and AC Fan Question

Time for an intro. I inherited an '86 coupe last year from my Dad. He bought it in 1990 after his '83 cab was flooded during hurricane Hugo. It was his daily driver and I've been fortunate to be able to drive the car off and on since he got it. Unfortunately it ended up sitting largely unsued for about 2 years.

Since getting the car I've done or had done quite a bit of work. New wheel bearings, new tires, new paint, ducktail... Currently working through the supension. A pic from last fall is attached. Cell phone pic so crappy quality. One of these days I'll take some good photos and get them posted. Have gone to euro headlights since the pic.

This is my first Porsche, but have owned several other sports cars, mostly British. I enjoy wrenching and have restored a few cars including a 47 MG TC. I'm looking forward to working my way through the Carrera and really appreciate all the information on this board and how helpful all the Pelicans are.

Now for the question. I would like to blow air through the center vent using the AC fan but with the compresor shut down. Has anyone wired a switch into the AC controls so the compressor can be shut down while the fan is on? I tried the search function but the dreaded 3 letter search parameter has made it tough. It would be great if anyone could point me to a thread.

Welcome to the board!

As I remember you can just unplug the electrical connector on the compressor, it only runs the compressor clutch. Unless your 86 A/C was upgraded to have a pressure switch the fan should blow even without the compressor running.

The only reason to unplug the compressor is to keep from running voltage to the clutch. The clutch is probably OK and if you ever decide to fix the A/C you will be happy you have a good clutch.

Welcome. You may know already but you are only going to get recirculated air as the input to that fan is in the pass. footwell. Search blower +evaporator and you may have better luck. Ken

Thanks guys, I'll try unplugging the wire to the compressor clutch and see if it works.
