can you put a hitch on a 911
hello,
has any of you put a hitch on their porsche? My truck gave up and I have a recurring (once every 2 weeks or so) need to go to home depot and get material (sheet good, 2*4...) and was wondering if it was possible for me to use a $200 trailer and a hitch on the PCar to replace the truck (total bill would be much less than running an extra vehicule!) NOTE: I am not talking about hauling tons of dirt to the dump here, I am talking about a small trailer (200lbs) loaded with 20 2*4 and 3 or 4 sheets of plyboard/OSB and a 10 mile round trip to the BORG... see: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=42709 my PCar is my daily driver and I am sick of having extra vehicules that I only use once a week... cyrille Last edited by hpmad; 04-14-2009 at 07:36 AM.. |

I am sure you can, but I wouldn't. I see a lot of low mile minivans with trailer hitches that also have bad motors and trannies. Using a vehicle for purposes that it wasn't engineered for is generally a bad idea.

Trailering with a Porsche? NOT recommended. You can go to U-Haul and rent a truck for an entire day for $20. Save yourself a lot of future heartache and $$$$$.

I'm going to buck the trend and say that it depends on what you're towing. I'm just finishing up a hitch for mine in order to tow a small tire trailer to the track. There are plenty of pics of that type of use if you do a search here. That said, would I use my 911 to haul our 4x8 yard trailer to the dump? - nope.

Yes you can. As a matter of fackt, I've seen one with hitch few towns down from me. The owner tows two wheel dolly/trailer with track wheels and some parts on it.
Do I recomend that? I deffinetly wouldn't put one on mine car.

Check your Home Depot for rentals. My HD has a pickup truck to rent for $19.95, or a larger tilt body truck for 19.95 for 75 minutes. Would seem to make more sense to just do that a few times a year rather than use the 911 and have to buy/ register/ insure a trailer.

There was a long and very good discussion of this a few years ago. Do a Pelican search and you will find it.
Best, Grady

If you're just moving Home Depot swag about, would a drip rail mountable rack like a Yakima work? It would certainly be sturdy enough for a few hunks of lumber, plywood or sheet rock. And then you could mount your skis and bicycle there, too.

Thule makes a large range of car-specific drip-rail-attachable roof fittings that's carry everything from 2x4s to competition bikes, canoes and kayaks, and I'm sure they have them for 911s.
