Urgent - transmission locked in reverse. 1971 911E. Will not function even with shifter in any other gear.
Am stuck in a remote area. Help.

It's most likely to shift fork in the bottom of the trans. There are known to come loose from their mounting plates.

I'm assuming you can move the shift leaver around with very little resistance.

It's not expensive to fix but you have to drain the oil to check the shift fork.

But make sure it isn't the linkage or bushes etc... Check the external stuff first

This is how mine looked when I opened up the trans recently.

Thanks Peter,
I think I read your post a few weeks ago about you shift fork, glad it wasn't an expensive fix!
I was in my car, stranded on a twisty mountain road to Panorama Ski Resort, so I had my dad post this post, but...... the trans is now working! All I did was spray a bottle of windex on the tranny, then threw a couple of snow balls at it, let it sit for about an hour, then Viola, it worked! I was driving it pretty hard, so I think the trans got a little hot. The vent on top of the trans might be plugged, causing air pressure to build. Cooling it allowed the air pressure to reduce enough for the thing to work again???? This is a crap shoot.
Has anyone had this happen?

I think that's an odd theory. But, odd things happen. I would check your fluid level.

I just did a search, and found that a lot of Pelicans have had similar problems. The issue is that the gears get locked between reverse and 5th, or two other gears. I had just adjusted my shift coupling before this happened, so I must have miss aligned things a bit. Enough to " confuse" the trans. When I had the car in neutral, the trans was in reverse. When I put the shift leaver into any of the 5 gears, it would not move. The clutch would be grabbing, but the car was not moving. After letting it sit and cool down, it worked again.... life with a 38 year old 911.
