making my 911 quieter

Car is a Carrera 3.2, SSIs, SW chip, Monty 2in 2out muffler.

Problem is I need to quieten the car down due to "domestic circumstances"

Any idea what to do to significantly reduce noise at idle and the drone at cruising speeds?

Any suggestions welcome.

RG5

Yes see if you can block a tail pipe off that will drop sound levels considerably

I have almost the same engine set-up and I use a Triad "street" muffler for around-town use. Very quiet and inexpensive. 2-in, 2-out version.

http://www.triadwestperformance.com/

My only caveat is that the guy that makes the Triads has been difficult to catch in the past as I don't think he does this for a living.

Try putting a removable cap on one pipe.

Lots of threads on this, some pics.

That is a very nice setup, the 90 decibel dual outlet.

Thanks for the link

I don't know if the internal arrangement of the Monty is like that of the factory cow horn style mufflers. If it is, you can block off the pass. side outlet with no loss of power.

thanks for the replies.

Assuming I want to keep the SSIs - which I do - what would be a good muffler to replace the monty with to get more refined sound levels. It would have to be a 2-in muffler. Any muffler recommendations for this?

RG5.

Is it interior noise, or external noise that concerns you most?

I'd keep the Monty but block it off as per above.

Otherwise the stock muffler is fairly quiet & does not lose power like many after market - but not all - do.

You could try replacing the sound pads in the engine compartment and under the rear speaker deck. They tend to deteriorate and become ineffective, and there are superior materials available these days as well.

Choice !: Block off the Monty
Choice 2: 1 out gen 5 M&K. Big db difference between gen 1 and Gen 5.

block off the RH pipe - then ASK HER "honey, How does the car sound now? Is it OK? I did so & so" - give dirty, gritty details

- even if not really satisfied, the action & "consultation" on your part may make her relent

- next do the sound pad on engine side

- last tear the whole cabin-side rear panel apart - and MAKE IT OBVIOUS that this is a big, involved job

- soo big that it takes your time away from participating in whatever couples thing she wants you to do but you don't really want to do yourself

- soooo big that the interior panel has to get stored inside her house for a while -- very sad - BUT an inevitable consequence or your satisfying her.
