Not Happy With My Tail

Posted this in the wrong section...

I have never been happy with my large tea tray whale tail and feel it takes away the sleek lines of the car...my wife calls it "the drug runner car". I am liking the Carrera tail and wanted to solicit the thoughts of my fellow Pelicanits to see what they think. Can the Carrera tail rubber bolt up to the turbo tail frame? What are my options out there that do not take away from the lines of the car.

The white targa bar takes away from the lines more than the tail. I'd consider painting it black and returning the Fuchs back to their stock finish before messing with the tail.

I love the white targa bar, curious to see what you can do to lose the wing. Seems like its just too much black rubber with all that white.

I think the tail looks great with the wide body look.

Plus, it IS factory. If you are concerned about originality it would not be a good idea to change it out.

I like the white fuchs myself but I see why your wife might call it a "drug runner" car. That look was pretty prevalent in the Miami Vice years.

My thoughts were the same when I had that tail on my white 82 targa. It's a combination of the flat targa top and the flat tail top.
Consider going tail-less. I noticed a pep after removing and selling the heavy thing.

We are ALL SO FINICKY WITH OUR CARS!! I personally think that turbo tail is very befitting of the wide body. I like it. I wanted to change my carrera tail to the turbo tail. Your car looks very clean like it is.

My wife actually thinks I should put a whale tail on mine. I at first agreed, but now I love the way it slopes from the Targa bar all the way to the rear bumper as one long continuous line. I think it's slick, and stock for mine which makes it better. Just don't razz me for the Boxster wheels. When the budget allows, they will be returned to stock also.

the rubber is not interchangeable. I learned this on my search for tail. Saw afew that were mis matched. It looked bad.

FWIW, I have a whale tail, brand new factory, never painted or installed, I might be selling soon...all hardware incl.

I've always liked the look of a ducktail on the targas. It's all personal preference, but my "general" rules are: Carrera tails on cabs, Turbo tails on turbos, Ducktails on targas, and no tails on coupes.

have you considered deleted the tail entirely? might be the best look for a turbo-bodied Targa.

the problem is you have 3 design elements fighting each other: flowing turbo flares, blocky targa bar and window, big black chunk of rubber hanging out the back.

wheels look a little tucked in as well, making them look smaller, which ultimately adds emphasis to the other elements instead of balancing the flares out.

Your car looks great. I like the mono tone look a lot, especially in white. Why not get a non-tailed deck lid and switch them out occationally? Best of both worlds and the change-over is pretty simple.

Shaun,

I am in the process of lowering the rear and 1/4 spacers to push the wheels out...total agree with you on the "little tucked in"

Personally, I like the originality of the turbo tail on the widebody. However, I am also a big fan of the widebody with no tail. How about if you were to buy another decklid, paint it white to match, and switch it out as the mood suits you?

Get rid of the white targa bar and the white wheel centers first.

Too funny...my wife teases me all the time saying that I need a white linen jacket when I drive the drug runner car...

LOL. Miami Vice was the first thing that came to mind. Just recently I looked at pictures of myself in the 80s - white pants and coat.

Grass is always greener... We just look for reasons to change things. The turbo tail looks great, leave it.

+1, try to find a used lid and have it sprayed. It'll also keep you busy and off the streets for a while.

these cars need a tail.

Ride out to the desert on a windy day and do 90 mph w/tail removed.
