A 912 is NOT a 911. I'd take it back to the used car lot guido and drive it up his ass sideways.

don't sugar coat it man! :D

Wow...that IROC car looks awesome! I thought IROC was run with Camaros (IROC-Z). With a few changes and decals my car could look pretty close to that one no doubt. Whats wrong with my whale tail...is that the wrong one?

The car is not rusty...the paint job is very nice and theres only a few rust bubbles...he even gave me some leftover paint to touch it up. The floors and underneath are solid. And the body kit is not ricer...look at that sweet IROC car with the same kit! I don't think I coulda bought any other car for 5G that looks as nice as mine.

C'mon guys....

dtw 04-23-2009 05:57 PM

OK I'll give you the non-ricer part. You're right. All I saw was the wheels.

A few rust bubbles are what we call 'famous last words'. Give me a magnet, an icepick, and five minutes with your car, and a case of beer says I could break your heart with what I would find.

And again, if it has a 4 cyl beetle motor in it (912E), you got fscked. Even if the rust bubbles are ALL there is and there's nothing else rotten below the surface. He just lied, pure & simple, and laughed all the way to the bank. He pulled a classic d-bag sales move.

Mia911 04-23-2009 06:06 PM

for 5K i know it have more than bubbles...front and rear windscreen cowl must need changing, right now youre seeing bubbles, but believe me there is more going on, put the car on a lift and go through it, check your floor pans, suspension pan, pedal area, rockers and everything you could see under there....

DTW is right about the rust, a little bit showing can turn into a real mess in a hurry. I have personally made that voyage, it sucks.

Here is a picture of a 912 motor, is this what you saw?

dtw 04-23-2009 06:16 PM

Yeah...does the motor look like the pic on the prior page, or does it look like this:

Jakester1168 04-23-2009 06:19 PM

What are the odds the previous owner had the body kit installed and entire car painted to hide the rust?

Rich...that's one heck of a "rats nest" you have there! ;)

Playa, the 912E generates about 80HP considerably less than the 76S, If your engine looks like the pic below then you have a flat four VW 2.0 with FI

If you want heart stopping perforrmance (it sounds like you do) then put the 3.0sc engine in it with the sc transmission & s brakes, you wil need to upgrade the electrical system
Alternately if you keep the type 4 Jake Raby at aircooledtechnology.com is doing some amazing things with the type 4. http://aircooledtechnology.com/type4/912E/index.html

Just my 2/c but I think the car would look much better with some readily available and within your price range 16" Fuchs or Cookie cutter wheels
Good Luck !

Playa76911S 04-23-2009 08:51 PM

My engine dont look exactly like any of those pics...my memory aint good cause I looked at the motor maybe three times. It has a fan in the middle and one carburetor (I think...never worked with carbs) on each side. It has a separate air cleaner on each side on top of the carbs. Didn't think to count the plug wires/cap...hell I didnt even know you could buy a 90hp VW 911...Im surprised Porsche sold a motor like that in their top line car. That's kind of like a 4 cylinder Mustang my friend used to have...what a dawg!

As for the rust I will take a closer look but the car seemed very strait and clean all round. It came from California and the guy drove it to NC where I live a few years back. NC aint New York where cars rust after a few years. I'll take some pics tomorrow...I'm signin off and goin to sleep if I can! The car is at my folks house and I'm at the dorm.

snbush67 04-23-2009 10:24 PM

Oh great now he recalls some carbs, tomorrow well find out he made a mistake and it is actually a 67 S. I'm beginning to smell what the playa is cooking.

Playa76911S 04-24-2009 08:18 AM

OK here ya go...it looks like the VW motors you posted but the intake is diffrent. Hopefully its been built for more power. That link to the VW motors above says it has 76HP stock!

VIN number is 9126000003 so I guess I got a 912. :( Ya Im feelin screwed right now cause I really fell in love with this thing...gonna call the dude who sold it to me.

next time please do 5 minutes of research before handing over five thousand dollars cash to a used car salesmen, or anyone else. i hope you get your money back

dw1 04-24-2009 08:48 AM

Bottom line: You got ripped off BIG TIME.

As others have stated, the vehicle you just purchased is a VW-engined, Porsche-bodied car that was slow even in its day, and today is a performance dog compared to a low-priced economy car.

I would even put a bet on the fact that the body modifications are there to cover up the VERY serious rust problems common to Porsches of that era. Hmmm... I wonder if the interior was also modified, e.g. non-stock carpeting, aftermarket seats (or seat covers), etc. to hide problems.

I would hope that in the future you research the cars a bit more before making a purchase decision. There are any number of on-line resources that can help to decipher the VIN, and give many other details on various models.

It should be stressed that the Porsche 911 of the 70's and 80's were very fast cars FOR THEIR TIME. But compared to modern high-performance cars (for example WRX, Evo, etc.) most of them have good performance but nothing outstanding numbers-wise. 911 turbos are a different story, as they are still up there with the quickest of the affordable newer cars.

"Act in haste, repent at leisure..."

Well, college is a time for learning, isn't it?

If this all is a joke - Good one.

p.s.
Yes, I think most of us here are older, and have owned sports/performance/collector cars before. Does anyone know of a previous poll about age & number of enthusiast cars/bikes previously owned?

ramonesfreak 04-24-2009 08:52 AM

if a guy cant look and see that there are only 4 spark plug wires when for a 911 there should be 6.... dear god i wish i had that kind of cash to toss around for impulse purchases

The seller is a Jiu Jitsu teacher how did U know that? I bought it out of his driveway no dealer...he claims he never told me it was a 911 which is true but he did say that the car was the "base model of the 911" and was the same thing HA! In any case he wont give me my money back...and yeah...he is a big tough dude! I dont have a lotta cash to throw around but I got the insurance paid out so there ya go.

But I really like this 911/912E whatever it is...when I pulled up at school this morning a lot of my friends thought it looked hot and wondered if I won the lottery! Rather than slam my car what can I do to increase the power a bit until I can buy a 911 engine? Where can I find a "how to" for tunin it up?

I know who you mean but i had to hit the hay after my last post last night. it seems you guys carried on without me.:D

teenerted1 04-24-2009 09:20 AM

go over to the 914 board on this site. there is a lot of infor there on the 2.0L engine in there. the engine you have is the same as the last generation of those...looks like they swapped out the FI for carbs too. some think this improves HP but at the cost of MPG and reliabilty.

good luck you learned a valuable life lesson.

ALWAYS GET A PPI...if the seller wont allow you to take it to a mechanic of your choising before laying down cash....WALK AWAY!!!!

First lose the wheels and get some Fuchs. 7x9x16. Figure $1800 on the high side, $1400 on the low. That alone will save you 100 lbs of unsprung weight and the car will feel a little better, but 912s are momentum cars, so a new Beetle will still crush you.

don't even bother trying to get more hp out of your motor.

Next, save $7500 for a 3.2 install. Figure $5500 for the motor and $2K for incidentals. If you are lucky, could do it for $6500.

dw1 04-24-2009 09:47 AM

Short term: Go to the "Porsche 914 & 914-6 Technical Forum" & "Porsche 912 Technical Forum" parts of the Pelican board - lots of info there.

But look at the cost & benefit (in hp) you would get out of any mod to that engine. It would take a lot of money & work just to get a 25%- 30% increase in hp.

Longer term: Rather than an engine swap, which will be expensive & a lot of work, and (please excuse me if I am wrong) you don't seem to know a lot about these cars, it would probably be better to sell the car and just buy a 911SC (which had the 3.0 L engine).

If you like the car as an "image car", and want to learn more about these classics - Great! But I kind of get the impression you might be happier in a different car, say a modified WRX. I am NOT saying this to be insulting in any way, but you earlier implied you wanted performance superior to your non-turbo Eclipse. FYI, even C4 'vetts can be picked up at reasonable prices.
