Angry Shifter problems after short shift/bushing/seine install

I just installed a Weltmeister short shift kit, seine spring centering device, and new bushings on my 77. I've been scouring the the search here for a while now trying to figure out if anybody else has had a similar situation but can't find anything that has helped me yet. I keep going through the procedure to adjust the shifter (neutral, loosen clamp bolt, rotate coupled clockwise, hold it there, move shifter so it's vertical and touching the driver side of the gate in the 1-2 shift plane) and I've probably done it 20 times now tonight but every time I do it, I only get some of the gears easy to select. Most of the time it's 1-2, 3-4 tend to be like I'm hitting a wall when I try and shift into them. I can usually get 5th but when you go to deselect 5th most of the time, unless I really pull back on it and guide it to neutral it just barely comes out of 5th and appears to almost get stuck in 3rd. That's the other weird thing, after getting 5th I can usually go get 3-4th. Sometimes I'll be able to row through all the gears 1st through 5th no problem and then suddenly 3rd, 4th give me issues again. When it does shift it feels awesome! Very precise direct feel, more "notchy" than it was before with the stock shifter and worn bushings, where it seemed to be swimming in each gear. However, before I never had any issues getting into any of the gears and now I am. Any suggestions?!?

I put in a Weltmeister short shift years ago. I drove around the block once and took it back off. I did not like the way it made the shifts feel. I would try that first, and see if it's OK with just the Seine kit. If so, ditch it and look into getting a factory short shift or leave it stock as I did.

Dittos to Barney...

I had my transaxle rebuilt, I installed new shift bushings and was having problems with the gear shift adjustment. I took the car to my Porsche mech and he immediately took out the after market short shift kit that the PO had installed and re-installed a factory short shift kit. It now works perfectly, well as good as they're suppose to work...

Thank you both for the advice. While it did help, I didn't actually get rid of the weltmeister short shift. The stock shifter is unacceptable for me, with my Sparco EVO2 the shifter can't go into 2nd gear when my girlfriend is driving my car at autocross due to her having to move the seat so far forward. Even with me sitting back a ways (6' driver) the knob is still touching the forward portion of the seat bolsters.
So, here's what I did, I switched shift levers back to the stock one and THEN aligned everything until it was shifting perfectly. I then without touching the adjustment on the coupler, removed the shift tower and put the short shift kit in. This worked like a charm. Shifts are DRASTICALLY shorter and the seine kit has removed all the "swimming" the shifter seemed to want to do before. (I'm sure the new ball cup bushing helped also) Shifting feels crisper, more direct, notchier, definately takes a little more effort but that's to be expected when moving the leverage point as one is doing with this kit. I'm sure the factory short shift kit is far easier to get lined up perfectly, I have some serious issues with the overall design of the weltmeister kit, but if you can get it setup properly as I did it actually does feel pretty damn good. If I hadn't gotten such a great deal on the setup I'd probably have gone with the factory kit just because of the design.

It was the effort and notchy feeling I did not like. I'm going to be installing a Hargett shifter in my track car. Not sure how the feel will be yet, but I definitly like the improved shifter location. Up higher and back a litlle, just drop the hand off the steering wheel and it's right there.

Yeah I'd love the Hargett shifter, looks like the best shifter setup for a 911 I've seen yet. However, the price and the fact that it isn't well suited for a street driven car is a serious deterrent. After you get it in there though I'd love to see pictures and get a report as to the feel of the shifter. Cheers.

Why do you think the Hargett isn't suited to a street car? I just bought one for my '72 which I plan to use 90+% on the street.

The mounting location directly above the ebrake just seems to be a bit more hassle than it's worth. I'd like to see one up close though to see just how inaccessible it is, since right now my opinion is just based on hearsay.

I've seen pics on the Hargett site with the e-brake in there, so I know what you mean, but I've heard from people that said it was OK on a street car to access the ebrake. Mine is a race car with no ebrake, so I did not care.

shifter aligment porblems

Hi , I just want to have a tight shifter in my 1973 911t, I relpaced the coupling and now I lose 1st and 2nd, I dont know what to do INEED SOME HELP PLEASE

small movements at the coupling make for large changes at the shifter. take your time and play with it till you get it right. The factory short shift is the only way to go unless you go WEVO

+1 on RSTarga advice. Do you know how to make the adjustments under the plate on the tunnel in front of the rear seats? Do a search on this forum and you will find lots of info and pictures.
