OK, just got back from trying on a set of Pole Positions.

The fit seems sung but fine. My factory sport seats are more comfortable.

Yes the top harness holes are a bit low bit I do not know when I would be going to a harness.

The fabric seems so thin. I gress I am wondering how long it will last before I ware a hole in it from getting in and out?

Still thinking.

I took a look at a PP seat that I have mounted in a 77 'C3.0. With the seat bolted to the bottom hole of a Recaro aluminum side mount, there is about a half inch clearance between the bottom of the seat and the top of the side mount/slider.

A factory slider is about the same thickness as a Recaro one, just under an inch.

Yes, the stock Recaro sidemounts give adequate clearance using the lower holes front and /or rear, the al. were fine out of the box, the steel have a very wide bottom flange that needs to be cut off

This is an SPG XL w/ Recaro steel side mounts, the base is pretty much the same as PP, also shown is a GT3 sub bar

The issue w/ these is for those w/ long legs, the Recaro sides when mounted as designed o/s the seat ~2 1/8" forward compared to BK. For a 34" inseam this is inadequate. Many w/ long legs mount them backward, which presents some other relatively minor issues.

Bill,

That GT3 sub strap bar is interesting. How is it mounted in the photo above? I can't quite see the details.

Do you happen to have a picture of one unattached to a seat? Do you happen to know the part number off of your head?

Thanks,
Jeff

Here's an early mockup

and another installed pic

It worked w/o alteration(except for drilling holes) w/ the Recaro sides but the BK sides needed to be relieved a few mm /side

It's a nice solution for those that don't want to drill holes in the car. Not race legal though.

I guess my question is, with the slider and the seat set to its lowest setting, am I or how much head room will I gain?

Just did this with a Recaro Profi SPG XL (same difference as PP), used the Recaro double slider and BK mounts. It all worked like a charm. Note the BK mounts will be a bit of a different model for the PP. My writeup:

Ruby (& Ed) gets a new race seat-installation info

Ed,

Can you give me any opinion if your seats are lower than stock seats. I need at lease 1.5".

I'm sure they're lower than stock. I tossed the stock seats years ago and went' to SRD's, which were a bit lower. These are a little higher than them, but my "feel" is they are less than stock. I'm not sure if its 1.5" though.

So what do I need to purchase for this set up?

1. Recaro sliders
2. BK or Recaro side mounts (I prefer Recaro for the looks)
3. 964 RS side mount bolt for stock seat belt mounting (can I successfully mount these on the Recaro side mounts)?
4. A couple of 3mm washers (what diameter inner and outer)?
5. GT3 sub belt bar (also compatible with Recaro side mounts)?

Anything I am missing besides the seats and harness?

1) Recaro or oem non power seat sliders are best
2) BK side-mounts are made from SS and are very sturdy but also very heavy and very difficult to modify, and you will need to modify them. I had the benefit of a fully equiped machine shop and machinist when I did mine, it was still a major PIA. Recaro has both mild steel and aluminum. I used aluminum FIA certified on mine.
3) yes, they go between the slider and side-mount, you will need to drill bolt holes, I used low profile bolts on mine(I think M8)
4) the 3mm washers are oem parts, 999.025.231.03 washer 8x27x3, I used 4 on each seat, you need a minimum of 3 per seat
5) GT3 sub bar, 996.521.933.90 1 per seat, the ends are also 3mm thick and match the above washers and RS tunnel side belt mount, all are sandwiched between the sliders and side-mounts

for mounting the 6pt harness you first need to decide if the oem 3 point belts are going to be retained. If so you need a door side clip that bolts to the stock door side bolt position, I used Rennline's version. On the tunnel side use the RS part for the stock 3 point receiver and use a separate pad eye bolted through the floor for the harness mount. Be sure that there is a straight unimpeded run for the subs and shoulder belts to the mounts, some seats have poorly positioned or too small holes for some physiques. On the laps by sure that there is freedom of the locking bars to move w/o contacting the side holes. You need to be able to loosen and freely tighten the belts while strapped in, this can't be done if the mechanism interferes w/ the seat shell.

I have two pairs of steel Recaro side mounts available that I used with my PPs in my '84 until I changed to the aluminum ones bolted straight to the stock seat rails. They look just like the black ones you see in Bill's picture with RECARO in white letters (the one with the SUV in the background). You can attach the stock manual sliders to them but the stock sliders only lock on one side. I'd consider different dual locking Recaro sliders instead if for racing. Sliders add 6-7 lbs each so I don't use them. Bonus is the seat is in the perfect position when you get in. The negative is if you get in a crash for some reason, sliders make it easier to get out. There are different holes in the bracket so you can mount the seat as low as you want it. The seat belt receiver lines up perfectly to the upper edge of the side bolsters. If anyone is interested in them, just let me know.

The fabric used on the PPs are actually quite durable and I think you'd need to be careless to tear them. To minimize abrasion of the fabric, I cup my left hand over the edge of the bolster where my butt would rub against, for support as I slide in.

The black ones in my pictures are steel Recaro side-mounts I used them for all the mock ups, then did the finals in aluminum. They steel and aluminum are pretty much the same dimensionally.

That's an interesting comment about the factory sliders. All the ones I've seen are dual locking like this, the early ones from ~'74 when the thrones were introduced are somewhat different but are also dual locking

Bumping this old thread full of great info in search of some new details.

Does anyone have a contact for the Speedware mounts mentioned? I'm not sure if they're still in business, but I would like to try to buy a pair or two (new or used) for my seat install.

On a similar note, has anyone used Rennlines seat mounts and have any experience with them vs the well documented Recaro and BK versions?
