Damn, I just lost a great deal

On ebay, there was this pair of backdated heat exchangers and muffler.

They went for $510. I was the highest bidder at $465 till the last 4s. My max was set at $500 .

You were sniped. I learned about it the hard way on my first bid back in 1998. I'm winning all week then BAM lost in the last 5 seconds and no time to put in another bid.

There are some programs out there if you really want a certain item or part.

that's the ebay game. I can usually get a bid in and have 1 second remaining on the auction. as mentioned, it's called sniping. all part of the fun.

you have no idea what the winning bidder's max bid was. he very well may have put in a max bid of $800, you would have had to go to $810 to best him. you didn't miss out on a great deal, you weren't willing to pay more than $500, and they went for more than $500, so you didn't miss anything. Whether they went for $510 or $5 million shouldn't make any difference to you. |

to be honest bud, you'd have lost them anyway, if you were prepared to go to $500, and someone else wanted to go to more

I only use snipe tools, no sence in needlessly make the price higher than it needs, good if you are buying, I guess not so good if you are selling I'm not always about when auctions end, work etc |

Also when bidding, don't set your max at an even amount. If you're willing to bid $500, set your max to 503 and change. I once beat a guy out for a replacement bulb for my data projector by 2cents. Made my day!

Here's how I bid on Ebay. Wait till the last day, then put in a bid for what I am willing to pay. Then to avoid auction fever I go away and don't look till after the auction is over. Previous poster is correct, it's better to bid an odd amount. On this I might have bid $515. What happened here is the sniper put in a bid somewhere over $510 and the auction increment was set to $10 so winning bid was your high bid of $500 plus $10.

			Hey,

I use a service called auctionsniper.com, pretty good product, never had a problem with the service. I use it to keep me from the heat of the moment bidding, I figger how much I am willing to pay and leave it at that. Good luck next time! eric P.S. unless you are bidding against me!

Click is right...sniping allows you to sit back and figure out just what you're willing to pay, then set the snipe and walk away. Since the snipe doesn't go in until the last seconds, it keeps you from getting involved in or initiating a bidding war and getting the price jacked up unnecessarily. You can see that happen especially with the guys who have "0" or only a few transactions...they get caught up in the bidding fever with other "0" folks and the price gets rediculous. I've won a lot of things thru the snipe program and only get beat out by the guys who pay for the snipe programs that put in the bid within 3 seconds of closing. Mine is set at ten seconds. It costs more for the programs that bid with only a few seconds left...and you can also miss entering the bid if there's a hiccup in the system when your last second bid goes in.

That is good for you, but this sounds fishy to me, like it was intentionally bid up, by the sellers accomplice.

In real life auctions, there isn't a set time when the auction ends. It ends when there are no more bidders to step up to the plate. I would recommend that eBay extend the auction for five minutes after every bid - this would allow bidders to "rethink" and up their maximum bid at the end, something that happens in live auctions all the time. This of course, wouldn't be good for "snipers" (of which I am one - almost every auction).
