Two CV Joint Questions
(1) Anti-size or no anti-sieze on the CV bolts? Just completed a drop/swap and did not use anti-sieze.
(2) No gaskets used and none listed in parts for post 85 cars. Is this correct? Thanks! |
I'll take no. 1.
No, don't use anti-seize. In fact, the opposite. Use Lock Tite in a completely flushed out and clean dry threaded hole. W/o the gaskets (I'll let someone else chime in on that), you might not experience the typical loosening of the torque on those bolts. Most re tighten after 100 miles and 500 miles. You might want to go back and check at those intervals and if they have become loose, remove them, clean out the threads on both the bolt and the holes with brake or carb cleaner and use the thread locker compound. |
No on antisieze, and no gasket.

The bolts need to go into a dry clean hole, spary carb cleaner in the holes and use a Q-tip to clean out. Clean dry bolts too before the locktite. Use a new allen wrench socket to torque. Retorque at 100 and 500 and annually thereafter.

Well, it sounds like I did things partially correct. I cleaned the bolts with brake cleaner but not the holes. I may go ahead and order some new bolts. What color thread locker is recommended?
|
The holes were good man- things were plenty clean. I would torque next week and we'll see where we are.
Is it running yet? Don't forget we left the tranny bolts loose. |
does the gasket contribute to the bolts coming lose? i had one come off, going slow, now i use new washers everytime and locktite and recheck every so often
|
I used Locktite Blue and marked them with a Sharpie. THey havent moved sicne installation in over 2k miles

The Sharpie marking idea is BRILLIANT - visual inspection instead of the whole torque wrench thing...
This forum is awesome! |
Guys,
The correct method is to …. Naw, I’m going to answer on page 15 of : http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/222537-reconstructing-constant-velocity-cv-joints.html Randy’s classic thread: “Reconstructing Constant Velocity (CV) Joints” While this thread is very long, it is “must reading” when dealing with the issues around CV joints staying attached to your Porsche. I’ll encourage everyone to read and study the entire thread. Best, Grady |

Blue is medium stregth so no heat needed. Mine is an '88 so no schorr washers etc. I did buy new bolts from PP when reinstalling the axle and read all of Grady's advice above. The biggest factor for success is keep it all clean clean clean then proper grease and NO grease on threads or bolts. Its a duirty job but someone has to do it! |
