Does new alternator VR need break-in?
Installed a brand new Valeo voltage regulator (from our host) to the alternator and now the charging light stays on with very slight blinking at idle and only goes out at 2000+ rpm.
Since the brushes of the new VR only contact the rotor copper wire at a smaller area than the crescent perimeter of a used one, could that new VR brushes need some time to break in before the charging light would go out at idle? Thanks a lot!

It does not need to be "broken in." Oh and you should have at least 1/2" deflection in the middle of the belt. Too tight is not good at all. Leads to premature bearing wear.

Kurt, I don't like it to be too tight, either.
![]() Am thinking about the possibility of slipping at the pulley area as I used some silicon spray to finish the alternator fan/case after cleaning them. Though I did slightly clean the central part of the fan there may still be some left.
