84 Carrera 3.2 stalling issue

Just started recently, after driving the car for a couple of miles and at a stop the car would stall.But starts back up fine but only occurs at idle. Any suggestions where to start to look,(fuel filter)?

I saw similar problems, even stalling between shifts. Turned out to be a tired alternator with worn-out brushes. A new voltage regulator corrected it instantly. A new alternator would have been even better, but... $

Mine (also '84) was the Cylinder Head Temp Sensor (CHT). It's telling the computer your engine's running dangerously hot & shutting you down (if that's the culprit).

Not terribly hard to replace yourself.

I agree, it could possibly be the CHT sensor. "Not terribly hard to replace", but a little bit of a PITA for me. Not meaning to hijack, but I would LOVE to find out where to pick up the tool for the CHT sensor.

On another note...I had a similar problem recently. It turned out to be the fuel pump. This could very likely be your problem as well. It's tough to nail down if the problem is intermittant. Are you finding that the car won't immediately re-start, and will only re-start after 2-10 minutes of inactivity? If so, it sounds like the fuel pump is on it's way out.

I made my own... deep socket & cut the groove in it. A 'proper' O2 Sensor Socket MIGHT work for you, but from memory there was a reason I made my own... not deep enough or something.

Yes, concer, PITA, but slow & steady & it's not a 'technically difficult' job.

I had the same problem, but it was very intermittent. Would only stumble and cut out when it was humid out. Turned out that the sensor wires (CHT & engine speed) which looked ok, crumbled when touched.

Fred is right, it's easy enough to cut a groove in a deep socket with a grinding wheel to get to the sensor.

I don't think its the fuel pump because it starts up immediately.Does run without stumbling,but seams to happen when I drive the car hard.

Then you can cross the fuel pump off the list. Go with Fred and Jim's advice and start testing sensors. Do you keep Dr. Bentley around for spec references?
