Question 8 Gaskets for CV Service???? '83 SC

Guys,

I'm trying to wrap up servicing my CV's. I've disassembled, cleaned, inspected and reassembled exactly as they were when removed. My thread on the effort:
Constant Velocity Joint, CV Joint Service - Maintenance

When I removed the axles I found that there were 4 gaskets installed; one between each CV boot flange and the CV joint:

I used 4 gaskets reassembling the axle: one between each CV boot flange and the CV joint:

.

As I prepared to reinstall the axles this evening, I noticed the flange on the transmission and rear spindle both have recesses that appear to be for gasket placement. No gaskets were installed there when I removed the axles.

Checking through various threads on CV's - and parts diagrams, its clear that there should be gaskets installed between the CVs and the drive flanges. Whats not clear is if there should be a gasket on each side of the CV - which appears to be the case for the '83 style CV assembly.

That adds up to 8 gaskets in all (I have enough fingers to figure that part out without too much difficulty

What gives? Should I purchase 4 more gaskets?

Thanks, Gordo

For Grady (if you read this thread) - I read through the lengthy CV thread you pointed out - great stuff. Some of the info applies to CV's in general, but a large part is '85 and on CV oriented. '83 and earlier appears to be a significantly different animal. Greatly appreciate any additional insight you can lend to this topic.

Gaskets are indeed used between CVs and axle flanges, so a total of 8 is correct. Having said that, myself and a few people I know don't use any gaskets for the CVs. The mating surfaces are all machined clean so there is little to no grease seepage without gaskets. Just one less thing to worry about when swinging a greasy metal dumbbell around under the car

Crazy

Thanks for the input Won, I agree - seems like it should be an all or nothing deal. If you are going to use the gaskets, there are recessions in the flanges for 8 of them, no sense in using them on one side and not the other.

I guess since I have started into it with gaskets between the CV and boot flange, I will round the project out with 4 more (and pick up some of those special washers in the process).
