Newbie with question about checking trans oil level

Hi Guys,

Just purchased my first Porsche two weeks ago... A black on black 1989 Carrera Coupe 122,00 kms with sport seats and factory whale tail.I replaced some of the fluids today, meaning engine oil and transmission oil,i was just wondering what the proper way to verify the level is other than dumping 3.8 liters and refilling it...
When i drained it only about 2 and a half liters came out which indicates the previous owner hadn't checked the level in a while.
It's impossible to check from the fill hole as the access is bad and i stuck the three foot long section of gas line i used to fill it up and didn't have a drop showing on it.

If anybody knows how to accurately check the oil level please do tell me
I think it's customary for newbies to post a picture or something so i will do that shortly, just waiting for the time to get some good shots...

By the way,i already installed a Fabspeed one in two out exaust,Fabspeed air filter cover with K&N,Steve Wong chip and their M&K cat bypass pipe and a 930 replica steering wheel from Sierra Madre...
Runs a lot better than the day i brought it home... lol
I appreciate you input !
Thank you

Phil

I'm not sure if I'm understanding you correctly but the proper way to fill a G50 trans for my year is to first make sure that you can open the refill plug, then open the drain plug, and finally refill with about 3-3.5 Liters of synthetic 75-90 gear fluid until it starts to run out the fill hole.

+1...what Por_sha911 says. Are you sure you're checking the right hole?

A good way to begin with is to buy the Benthley manual on the Carrera. Where are you located Phil...? On organise régulierement des rides...si tu veux te joindre à nous...tu es le bienvenue.

Correct - fill the trans until it's level with the bottom of the fill hole, which really means slightly overfill and let it drain to that level. However, I've found that if the car is only jacked up at the rear, the trans won't hold as much as if the whole car is level. So to really fill it, you need to do jackstands all the way around, or do it on a lift.

Thank you guys... Believe me i am NOT mechanically incompetent...
Like i stated ,i'm a Porsche newbie and i have the shop manual on CD but it doesn't mention anywhere how to fill the transmission !
If anything i found an alternate fill hole for people who dump their oil and can't remove the proper fill hole plug ... lol
I filled it by the rear upper plug that is situated on the right hand side of the gearbox.I removed the right rear wheel and took a three foot long section of gas line connected to an oil (pump) squirter gizmo from a hardware store. Very easy access and i guess it's good when you refill completely after dumping the old oil.
Now where is the proper fill hole situated ???

Thank you !
Phil

It's on the left (driver's) side, takes the same allen as the drain plug.

I would now check the oil level by removing the correct fill plug (left hand "driver's" side of the gear box), when the car is level. Unless the plug you used to fill on the right side is on the same horizontal plane with the correct fill plug you may have a over/under fill situation.
