Porsche Crest New to forum '89 Targa

New to this forum, so I thought I would honor the tradition of posting a picture.
And to think, it only took me 30 years to get one!

I know, I know VM right, but I did do my homework and for many years, I would find what i wanted but didn't know enough or didn't have the guts enough to pull the trigger. So I finally boiled it all down to what I really wanted, the latest air cooled, 3.2, G50 Targa in relatively good shape, find it and just get it!

I plan to add my 2 cents (some good, some not so good) to the large VM post I spent 2 hours reading through the other night.

So far I am very pleased with this more-than-likely hard driven 20 year old sports car.

Have already bought several books and parts from our host and will in the future, just not too many I hope, I don't want the car to become a shop queen.

Anyway, looking forward to being an active member!
I am grateful their is a full service site like this to help support me in my endeavor.

Thank You.

Cloud89

I read the VM post as well and came away less than impressed by their reputation. But, it seems you did your homework, negotiated a reasonable deal and are pleased with your purchase. That's about all we can hope for when buying a used car. Hope it all works out for you. The '89 is a GREAT CAR!

Thumbs up

Sounds like you did your research, VM had that car for sale for quite some time, I think the creative wording they used in advertising, rather than just flat out saying what it was kept buyers away. Congratulations, enjoy, it is a wonderful car.

time will tell, but hope the car holds up. The PostPI done by an independant in Dallas brought up a few questions that "Experts" should have known, but all-in-all they said the car appeared to be solid.

After the PostPI, I requested and without much fuss, VM sent me a $490 check that covered a LR broken sway bar mount repair ($290) and $200 more to replace the CD-2 that they were unable to get the code for. I was able to get the code straight away from one of The Dallas Dealers. I will be a bit wiser on my next purchase in 2020 of a nice 2010 911.

FWIW, everyone on this site is aware of VM's reputation. He's obviously sold a lot of P-cars, which I doubt that every single one turned out to be a clunker. It sounds like you've made all the right moves. So go out, enjoy yourself in what looks to be a very sharp ride, and drive the living p!$$ out of it just like Ferry intended.

Oh, and by the way...welcome to the site.

Welcome, nice ride. Post your location in the world on your profile, it will help when you ask questions. Post your first name in your signature as well.

Welcome!

I just love Grand Prix White on a 911. Enjoy your car, and welcome to the asylum. You are among friends. Slightly twisted friends that just KNOW it is completely logical to spend several thousand dollars on a suspension refresh or a couple grand to make the A/C work like a modern car. Don't ask how I know that.

One of the first things I questioned when I originally seen the add for that car was the ridiculously low mileage advertised. I have never seen another car with that many modifications that had that low mileage, additionally a broken rear sway mount is rare for low mileage, usually these only go after a bit of abuse on higher mileage cars.

Not trying to rain on your parade but I would see if a carfax indicates some possible clocking.

Great color combo, great year.

Still set at stock USA ride height which is rare.

High chance it was woman owned, a second or third car, and not likely abused. Most want to be race car drivers (like me) lowered there cars ASAP if the dealer did not already do so.

Enjoy.

Cloud89:

Please add your location to your profile. Congrats on the car- I had an '89 targa. About as good as it gets for that generation!

Cheers,

Paul.

GP White is a great color on a 911. I like Targas too.

Enjoy.

All the paper work points to one male PO. So supposedly, I am second owner.
Last 3 on VIN are 480.

Service records show PO @ purchase in 09/89 up to 4/3/08. Plenty of paper trail including trade-in and purchase negotiations.

service ticket dated 6/21/95 shows replacing rear sway bar mount (doesn't say which side) at 34976 miles.

If I end up being taken to the cleaners, I have no one to blame but myself.

Thanks for all the kind words and encouragement!

08-21-89 PCNA fax to NV dealer include short shift, partial leather Elec sports seats, Radio w/CD, LSD and velour luggage compartment carpet.

Fax also shows tail, front spoiler, alarm, polished alloys, painted rims and center cap.

Don't believe anything was added after the initial sale to the first owner.

Well it sure looks good, what is the ridiculously low mileage someone mentioned?
Any more I think I would want the best body I could find, that looks like a nice one.
