idle problem

Hi, I'm still having an idle problem with my '77 2.7. When I disengage the clutch to shift the engine does not return to idle. Engine speed remains at what ever speed it is at when the clutch is disengaged, then after a few seconds will return to idle. However if I disengage the clutch when the engine is at idle, it will remain at idle.
I suspect the distibutor mechanical advance. I have carefully cleaned and lubed everything in the distibutor as previously instructed but no change. All the distibutor internals appear to be in good shape and operate smoothly. The two mechanical advance springs are not identical. One has eyes on both ends the other has one eye and a hook on the other end. One spring is always under tension the other (with the hook) only sees tension when the weights are fully deployed.
Can anyone help? comment?

Check for vacuum leaks, especially in the decel valve. Try plugging the line to the top of the decel valve and see what happens.

The 2 diz springs are supposed to be unlike each other.

Search "Gunter". I think he has a great thread on dizzy maintenance.

the decel valve could be bad, or filled with oil. sounds strange i know. mine started holding the rev's too, although not that bad. so i bypassed the decel V. i recenctly removed the whole throttle body and decel valve and replaced it with a bigger one from a 3.0. the old TB was sitting on my bench. a few days later there was a pool of oil under the TB. i wiped it up and a few days later more oil.
as the rings go bad, compression blows by them. the compression has to go somewhere, so it goes thru the oil tank and the vent hose to the "turtle" on top of the TB taking oil with it. the oil accumulates in the TB parts.
