Transmission oil
I'm not lucky with this forum. I tried posting this question eariler today, but?
Have the 915 tranny out from an engine rebuild. Don't want to put it back in with out changing the oil. Can someone direct me to find out what oil and how much oil is required? |

Pretty much everyone will recommend Swepco 201 (including me
), but any of the good quality dino gear lubricants will be fine... do not use synthetics as they don't work well with the old school synchromesh system in the 915 (too slippery).I think my box took 3.5 litres from memory (1 gallon?) If you use the search function on the board for '915' and 'oil' you will get a LOT of info and recommendations ![]() Cheers

The 915 requires 7 pints of Swepco 201 (0.875 gallons).

If your transmission is shifting well and is quiet there's no reason why you shouldn't use a good quality OEM spec oil.
SWEPCO is great and I use it myself but the reason I went to SWEPCO was because my synchros were tired.

There was this guy named Warren who once held this board spellbound with his knowlege. He maintained that Swepco 201 was the only thing to use. He was convincing enough that more than once I told people that if Warren told me to use Swepco 201 on my breakfast cereal I would put the order in to Wayne. So Swepco 201 it is.
It's beyond debate that Swepco 201 is the trans oil to use. But there are a few tricks needed to make sure your Swepco experience is good. First, it is very thick. You have to get it warm to get it to flow easily. Put it in the sun for a few hours and get it nice and warm before using it. Second, the drain plug and fill plug are different. The drain plug is easier to remove than the fill plug. Make sure you can get the fill plug off BEFORE you take ther drain plug off. Third, when you see where the fill plug is, you will wonder how to pour the thick, heavy Swepco uphill into the fill hole. You have two choices: either rent a lift, strap your car to it and rotate the car 180 degrees so you can pour the Swepco into the fill hole, or you need to get a $20 fluid pump from Wayne. Go the fluid pump route. It is an amazingly handy tool that you will use for other tasks. You just screw the pump into the one gallon Swepco jug, stick the pump nozle into the fill hole, and pump it 'till it's full. That's all there is to it.

Trans overhaul break in oil and interval?
Sorry to hijack, but I have a related question.
Just did the synchros/dog teeth/sliders/brake bands on my 915 and I bought a gallon of Swepco 201. I don't want to waste it while the flakes and specks come off of all the new bits. So I bought some Castrol gear oil that I'll be dumping in there for the break in. Question: How long before I can get rid of the Castrol and put the nice delicious blue stuff in there???? As always, TIA.

Buy it from Wayne, of course. That's where I got mine. get the small fluid pump with it and you're good to go.

What!? Is your 915 THAT much different than mine? Mine holds about 3 litres/quarts (fairly similar). And 3 quarts is what I've always read around here.

3 liters=3.18 qt. 7 pts. =3.5 qt. Not a whole lot of difference there.
