901 rattling noise in 5th? Or MFI Cams related?
I have recently had the engine and gearbox out to replace a broken clutch pivot pin, and now have a new noise comming from the transmission. Before I go back to the garage thought I would check with the oracles.... :
![]() (I also had the MFI pump belt replaced at the same time) Fifth gear has always been a bit "whiney".... but now I get a rattling noise at precisely 2400rpm in fifth, but only when under load, and coming down hill, and not when the clutch is depressed. It is most apparent when going up a hill in fifth underload and under part throttle. Its a strange oscillating noise / rattle. Could it be the flywheel? Could it be the fifth gear getting worse? Is it related to the MFI pump belt/cams? Car is a 72E RS Rep, with a 70 2.2S to 2.5S with matching engine, gearbox and MFI setup. Cheers, Stu |

Sorry meant to say that it does "NOT" occur coming down hill or when the clutch is in.
(I had the MFI belt and "CAMS" replaced) |

S cams do not like low revs. You should not be using 5th gear at 2400rpm under load.
![]() My 911 transaxle makes noises like that, especially low in the rev range and coming away from a stop. 5th gear whine is common.
