help! which coil with my pertronix and cd box?
Hello everybody .
I live in France and i have a question because i don't have spark when i start my engine for the first time. it's a engine 911 2.0l 1969 with weber carburator idtp rebuilt. I have a CD box 3 pins , a distributor bosch yellow tag 0231 159 002, a pertronix ignitor 1866 and the coil i don't know if it's the good model. which model of coil do i choose because i think i need 3 ohms for the pertronix but for the cd box is it enough?? i took the ignitor wiring diagram of the pertronix website. Can you help me because i don't know what i am doing.i don't understand anything. excuse me my english if it isn't good. thanks for all Jérôme FRANCE ![]() ![]() |

Welcome to the forum!
Well, I think the first thing I would do if I were you is to get Wayne's 101 Project for 911 book. Read it carefully and develop an understanding of your car. The other book that is also helpful to better understand your engine is Wayne's How to Rebuild and Modify a 911 Engine. After reading these, you should have a basic understanding of how your car works. In the meantime, you need to find out why you have no spark. Even if you have a standard coil, it should still give you spark although it won't be optimal for your ignition system. Start by checking your CD box, make sure it make a high pitched buzz when you have the ignition on. Then see if you have voltage at the coil. Finally, pull out the main coil lead from the distributor cap and hold it about an inch from a good ground. The timing chain cover in the picture of your engine will work. Have someone turn the key and crank the engine, you should see a big spark. If so, plug the lead back in the cap and pull one of the lead to the spark plugs off and do the same. I am sure others will chime in, but this is the basic way to check for spark. This process will tell you if you have voltage at the CD box, coil, distributor, and ultimately at the spark plug. If you have spark at the coil, but not at the spark plugs, the problem may be your distributor or the pertronix ignitor you have installed. As for coils, I use the Pertronix 0.3 ohm black epoxy coil with the same CD box as you. Their epoxy coil was designed for high abuse, off-road applications. The coil can be mounted in any configuration making it ideal for our cars. The price was excellent and the flat black finish is not a distraction, and the sticker easily peels off. I bought this coil because I experienced 2 failures with the bosch coil (oil leaked out). For the price of one bosch coil, you can buy six of these coils. I would stay away from the Pertronix standard coils as their bodies are cheaply made. I cracked one of the poles easily during mounting which Pertronix gladly took back and suggested me their epoxy coil. The epoxy coil so far has held up over 8 thousand miles of normal driving as well as some track time. I didn't buy it from this source, but here's an idea of what it looks like and the price. http://pertronix.carshopinc.com/product_info.php/products_id/53/40611?osCsid=043ae8fe7a37219f8a6aa436c089fcbc Good luck, the engine looks great. Now let's see some pictures of your car. Andrew

Salut Jérôme
![]() Is it the correct one? From their site: ![]() The coil.. I'm confused. Their own docs says primary should have about 3 Ohm or higher for a 6 cylinder but the coils they recommend for CDI is 0'6 Ohm or lower. I believe they forgot to say that the calculations where only made for inductive systems as coils I saw for CDI are always lower than 1 Ohm in the primary. Someone else will surely give you better advice. Good luck! |

FWIW when I put in the pertronix (2.7L ) I deleted the CDI box, much cleaner install and no issues, plugs ran clean.

hello ael 911, rana1 and haycait 911
i have the kit 1866 because i have the distributor of a 911 S yellow tag. my pertronix ignitor 1866 is dead (today i have done the test with a battery and a multimeter ) because i think the original coil who work normally with a ballast resistor as a value of 1 ohm. i precise i havent the ballast resistor on my car, just this coil with 1 ohm. i think the coil dead my pertronix ,what do you think? i just buy a flame thrower 3 ohms with a new ignitor 1866 at classicgarage.com. do i do a good choice?? do you think all these parts work perfectly with my engine ( bosch CD box 3 pins, ignitor 1866, coil flame thrower 3 ohm ?? thanks for all you are sympathics men. regards jerome |

Here's info from Pertronix on the coil type to use
I had a similar question regarding what ignition coil to use with a Pertronix ignition on my '71 911 T. I have Webers, with the 3 connector Bosch CD unit & installed the Pertronix unit into a Bosch distributor. Pertronix indicated to use a 3.0 Ohm coil. Here's the reply I received from the Pertronix tech person. If this info is incorrect let me know, since I did go with their advice & installed a Pertronix epoxy filled 3.0 coil. The car seems to run fine, but perhaps I'm missing out on some better performance with a lower resistance coil.
This is from Pertronix: If you have a 12-Volt application you will either the 1.5 Ohms FlameThrower or the 3.0 Ohms FlameThrower coil. You will use the 1.5 ohm coil on 8 cylinder engines and the 3.0 Ohms coil on 4 and 6 cylinder engines. If you have any further questions feel free to contact me. Marvin Grebow Jr. PerTronix Inc.
