Searching for a 911

Hello, I am new to the form and looking for some advise. I just sold my 85 928S and want to move to a 911. First major hurdle my wife is in on this move, great! First major wall she wants a cab! I on the other hand would prefer a coupe always my dream car. However I am starting to lean to-wards a Targa or the Cab. looking at the SC's for various reasons. We live in Wisconsin so this is a sunny weekend driver for us. What are the general concerns with the cabs? Be fare don't want to get flamed here.

Now for the one wrench in the whole plan of the SC. I have an opportunity to get a very low mileage 76 911S Signature Targa 42K original miles 2.7L. This car is in mint condition other than seats and carpet, SC yet to be found so no comparisons there.

So please chew on that and give me your honest thoughts Cab vs. Targa, 80's SC vs. 76 911S. Thanks in advance.

Well, I'll be the first to say it - as Bruce Anderson advises, generally you want to buy the latest model 911 in your price range. As far as a 76 S versus an SC, I must recuse myself due to bias.

Seriously, if you really like the 76, the key is to get a PPI before you buy! Understand what you are getting into for that particular car - it's been said many times that all 911's of a certain age are 20,000 cars - either you pay it up front, or you pay it in repairs or restoration.

Lot of questions there. Cab's, Targas, coupes and sun roof coupes are all a matter of preference. The mechanics of the various models are less subjective. Many will tell you to buy the most you can afford. The later models get you a 3.0 or 3.2, which many prefer.

Just take your time and get the best car you can find. Get a PPI on any that you get serious about. For my money, interiors are the easiest item to fix and cost the least. As an example, after running a want ad for 3 months for a Targa for my friend, I got an email about a low mileage 1980 SC with nice paint but a very used interior. The cost was under 6K with all records for the only 2 owners.

They are out there.

I like them all But I got a cab just for the reasons you listed. Love the sunny drives...

P.S. Also, do note that while there is nothing wrong with a cab or targa, they tend to be heavier than a coupe and require careful maintenance of the targa or cab top. Take this into careful consideration when you are looking - neither is cheap to replace or rebuild.

On the other hand, I love taking that top out on sunny days, and since I face forward, I really can't feel any difference from the cab.

By now, most of the 2.7 cars have had the updates necessary to make them reliable cars. But don't just assume so!

If you like the car, get a thorough PPI, and make your decision. Lots of happy owners of 2.7 cars.

That being said, the 3.0 was definately a step up over the 2.7.

Thanks gang, agree with PPI is the first order of business on any car. The targa is a beautiful car and needs little work, as with my 928 hands on is no problem. The Targa is on it second owner and the first is just around the block with all the records since day one. Always a good sign. I have read plenty or so I think, and am armed with a thousand questions for any sale. Looking forward to joining the ranks of 911 ownership.
