replace oil cooler foam fender seal and thermo switch 1987 carrera?

I pulled my horns down and inspected my oil cooler in the fender well. The foam seal that goes around it is history, I need to replace it and thought while I was in there I would replace the thermo-switch with the bmw 99 Celsius thermos switch. Can I do this with the oil cooler lines attach to the cooler by just removing the mount bolts and letting it hang down, I don't want to undo the the cooler lines. also where do you get the small horns to replace the trumpet types Please advise, thanks JL

You can just unbolt the cooler but access would be tight and the oil lines are kind of stiff. you'll spill very little oil by just undoing the lines, although they may be tough to loosen after all these years

You may want to spring for a new set of front hoses, they can be found fairly cheaply. That way you can remove the cooler, clean it up and do this with a lot less pain!

I really doubt that you could replace the switch with BMW part without disconnecting the oil hoses. You will need really large wrenches. My BMW switch produced a 6 inch puddle of oil after the first install. The second time I used teflon plumers tape around the threads to prevent it from leaking. I purchased a long piece of generic rubber seal from McMaster-Carr to go around the outer edge of the oil cooler. You are welcome to the piece I have left over if you haven't purchased a seal yet.

Big fan of Mcmaster Carr - have been looking for generic fender rubber seal to use around the stone shield - can you tell me the MCarr part # you used?

Thanks!

I have just done my car with 3/4 water pipe insulation which is a round tube of hi-density foam that is split on one side, works great and a five foot length is a few bucks, home depot has it, JL

McMaster Carr edge grip rubber seal P/N 12335A25 I found this idea from another post. It sounds as though captainlewis has the part already. mschwein, if you could use it I will send you enough for one car.
