alternator check?

Not porsche related, but did get too much feed back over in PPOT so I am going to stick you guys with this before I tke it into my wrench.

Last night after dinner, me battery is complete dead. Not even the clock worked. I am thinking, the battery couldn't have die or drain completely. Jumped started it and as I am driving off, my buddy noticed that my head light would dim as I come to a red light. I am thinking its has to be the alternator. It is a 07 Toyota Sienna van. I do not have too many tools just a volt meter. What's the best way to detetmine if its the alternator. I am hoping the battery just crap out on me, but in just 2 years? What do you guys think?

put your voltmeter to the battery with the car running, you should get a charging voltage around 13.5 volts...
