Take me to where the turbochargers grow...
Maybe this thread can serve to be a reference for others like me.
I now own my first 911, it is an early car with a 2.0 N/A engine. It appears to have some internal upgrades (possibly "S" cams, maybe higher compression pistons, etc.) It has Weber 40IDF carbs. Is it a complete waste of my time and effort to look into a mild turbocharging kit? I think I am in the 150- 160HP range now. Naturally, I want more. Don't we all? Who makes such a kit? How hard or easy is it to take that step? My personal background is 1970's British performance motorcycles, American musclecars (lots of them...no turbos), and just about every performance upgrade to anything I have owned. I do all my own work, and can handle big jobs. Maybe just an engine swap would be best. I really like the idea of building a really powerful carbureted N/A engine, but, well, turbos are fascinating. What's the bottom line, is it a waste to consider, or can cheap horsepower be harvested with some simple bolt on weekend work? I can weld, and I'm not scared... ![]() Give it to me straight...am I better off just swapping? I could better afford a $1000 turbo kit than a $4000 ENGINE... Jeff |

If you put a $1000.00 turbo kit on your engine without being sure of what it has internally, you are likely to need a $4,000 engine.
I'd vote for making sure the suspension is up to snuff, the brakes are working fine, and then go find a track day or two to attend and see how much fun the car is with it's current motor. Then if you still feel the need for more HP and don't want to go the big HP ($) route of building a small displacement motor, look into a 3.6 swap. In any case its going to cost more than $4000 to do the job properly as when you start increasing the HP, and therefore the top speed, you need to look at thge whole package, brakes, suspension tires etc.
