Pls help with A/C Fan Noise
This weekend I bought my first 911. Caught the bug as a teenager with a 914. It is an 88 coupe with 125K. It seems quite nice and bought from a fellow Pelican member.
While driving it home, I noticed that I would pick up some noticeable fan rattling when the A/C was on the 2 highest settings. If found the fan/evap box and it sounds to me like the bushings in the motor may be having issues. I can make it appear and disappear by tapping on the motor housing. Needles to say, bumps on the road have the same affect. I would like to take it apart and repair the motor, however, it appears that I cannot get the cover off the box or remove the box without disconnecting the lines into the evaporator, which is something I prefer not to do. Is there any way to get this apart without breaking that connection? It appear there is a small plate where power line goes in to feed the motor. I can pry this off and try to inpect. It looks like that would give me visual access to the brushes/motor. Based upon the heat, it almost feels like the plastic housing supports the armature and actually is the bushing. Is that the case? That protrusion get a bit warmer when it is rattling. This car has a relatively new evaporator installed. Is it possible it wasn't assembled correctly. Not like we've every seen that before ![]() I don't have a manual yet and appreciate any guidance you guys can provide. Thanks |

The top of the evaporator box is just held with spring clips. You can remove the clips and the top will come off, but reinstalling the clips is a b!tch compare with taking them off.

There are two refrigerant lines coming out of the top of the box. Can I finaggle the top of the box over these two lines and the control devices attached to them? It seems like a tight fit. Ok.
I got it all apart. The bushing on the motor is shot. If I could find a way to get the fan off the armature, I think that I can ream out the housing and get a bushing in there to fix it up. Unfortunately the plastic fan is pressed onto the armature and there doesn't appear to be a way to get it off easily. Has anyone done this before and have any guidance? EDIT: I just saw that Pelican sells a motor for $75. I can probably cut the shaft off the old motor and press the fan off from the back if necessary. Then press it on the new motor. If anyone has done this before, I woulld appreciate any advise or techniques you can provide. Last edited by lr172; 06-08-2009 at 04:58 PM.. |

get the high output fan from griffiths. instructions on how to change are included or do a search here

on 86+
not the spacing or location of the fan on the old motor shaft, you take the motor with plastic fan attached, open your vise wide enough for the motor to fall between the vise jaws and not touch them, get your self a punch and tap the old motor shaft out of the fan, use a press to press the fan back on the new motor shaft |
