I've successfully drained the fluid from my 1970 911T 5sp tranny. Every other post I've seen references using a 17mm hex tool but this did not exist on mine, it was instead a bolt (17mm I believe) on the driver side. Took some convincing to remove and drained all the fluid successfully. I'm guessing someone replaced this.
Now the stupid question, where do I refill the tranny? Is it the dimpled cover with the two screws on the passenger side or is it hidden elsewhere near the top? I searched in my manual but no picture, and the Haynes manual references a different tranny. Also, from what I've seen in previous posts, it looks like Swepco is the way to go and several methods for filling. I only drive on the weekends and never track the car. Thanks, Dan [This message has been edited by Dan Morton (edited 06-09-2001).] |

It's another bolt, up, and on the driver's side. You fill it until the fluid level reaches the fill hole. You need to raise the car and also keep it level in order to do this.

A little late now Dan, but there is a good non Porsche specific rule for changing fluids in trannys or differentials.
Never never never remove the drain plug before you have partially removed the fill plug. You do this to make sure you actually can remove the fill plug. If you find you can't get the fill plug out, you can drive the car to a shop and have them do it. If you drain it first, you tow the car to a shop and have them do it. Tom (who has a very good friend who discovered this the hard way when changing the gear oil in his Ford Ranger) [This message has been edited by emcon5 (edited 06-09-2001).] |

to refill your tranny:
have someone help you....use a piece of garden hose, yes, garden hose about 3-5 ft long....clean the inside with gasoline and wait for it to dry. then have someone go under the car, slip one end of the hose into the tranny refill hole and pass the other end up to you ouside the car.... then let gravity do the job.... slowly fill the other end (with a cone) until you have in there the recommended volume, in my case it was 4 qts. I did this with my dad and refilled the tranny in under 20 minutes with Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil (4 qts as recommended by the manual)....havent had a drop of leakage to date. good luck |

Dan,
I believe you will find that plug to be a 19 mm hex, and very trouble-free to get out. The 901/911 gearboxes, as well as early 915s used a heavier steel plug that could be removed with the lug wrench, and much less trouble than the aluminum 17 mm plug used later! I encourage anyone wanting to have trouble-free experinces changing their gear oil to purchase one 999.064.008.02 filler plug and one 999.064.007.02 magnetic drain plug of the steel, 19 mm variety ... and toss the aluminum disaster that is just waiting to happen! I think the 3 or 4 oz weight penalty is worth the piece of mind! The M24 tapered thread is the same for all 901/911/914/915 trhansaxles! Of course, the VW steel plugs that use the 17 mm Allen drive bits can also be substituted! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

I am really finicky about the purity of liquids I put in my car. Not that a garden hose would necessarily contaminate the oil, but I prefer to use a pump. They are available cheap ($5-10) in hardware stores.

Hello
Depending on MY & version the plugs can be 17 or 19 mm units. There are several ways to find the fill up hole. Browse the net or look at the trany. It is on the left side in the middle hight. Clean the magnet on the plug and rescrew ( 40-50 NM ). Open filler plug. Jack up car from the driver side. Fill in 2,5 L and replug ( 40-50 NM ). ON absoulte emergencys you can use the vent tower screw to fill up. If the trany has no oil then only tow very short distances or let it flatbed. Towing long distances without oil will destroy Ring & Pinion. Grüsse |
